It wasn't luck. She had him locked in there with her with the door closed. That's just asking for a nasty "present" in the room when his little bladder explodes in the middle of the night. I would probably end up dead in the fire while trying to track down my cats.

MA had no business locking Tigger in with her at night. She could easily leave her door open aenough so he could come and go. Trapping a pet like that is wrong and is semi along the lines of poor Carrot and the Mancusi dogs having limited outside access while their owners were away.
I finished this morning. The beginning had some of the old joy in it. It seemed "fresher" than a lot of the preveious books. I loved the contest idea and think that would have been a perfect August book before 9th grade. The BSC members at that time would have to be thinking how HS would change the club and whether to cut back, the contest could help them (finally) compromise by adding a few new members. (Gordon, Barbara, Erica, etc. Even ask Anna to be an Associate). The "Fire" just wham springs up and there goes the positive vibe. :/ I hate that this ended the original BSC. If there had to be a fire it could have happened "years" ago in the series.
I didn't get (the timing) of those super early phone calls. Why call your bosses on a Saturday before 8am?! For that matter, why Verna had to know then is beyond me too, though she is family and I hope offered MA some comfort. ITA that Dawn should have stayed out of this. Not just because I don't like her either. I don't think there was a need for her to come that second. IMO, it was horrible how Jeff had to stay back in CA. It felt like one more write off to him. His Dad could have accompanied both him and Dawn on the plane and stayed for a few days in CT, in case either of them needed an out.

Mary Anne's door wasn't locked, just closed. If ever my cat is in my room with the door closed, he just meows for me to let him out...never had any presents.

I just meant that he was confined in the room. Seems like a hassle to be woken up (if she did wake up) every time he meowed to be let out. And, she had complained a few times prior to this book that Tigger liked to wake her up early in the morning. If she just left the door cracked a little then he could come and go as he pleased.
Booboo, do you have a cat or a kitten? Mine are almost 7 now with control of their bodily functions (usually), but I got them when they were a few months old and I swear they were in their litter boxes every 1-2 hours. Waking up 3-4 times a night to let them out of my room wouldn't fly with me.

For those of you with cats, how realistic is it that tigger would have just let her carry him out? I could totally see my cats clawing the crap out of me as I hugged them tightly to get them out. Maybe it is different when they sense that they are in danger but I don't know.

Yeah, mine are skittish on a normal day. A smokey, flamey house would be a no go. And there's two of them to carry, and one is close to 18 lbs, so I would seriously have to stuff them in a pillowcase or something to get them out. I think Tigger was just supposed to be the bestest behaved kitty in the land.

My dog allowed himself to be held for quite a while after the '94 earthquake. Both my Dad and I had to put on shoes, and then make our way out of the apartment building. I actually thought it was sweet that Tigger trusted MA (or maybe he didn't know what to do) to keep him safe. See, I said something nice about a fictional cat. Although, I'm not so sure I believe that he'd really let himself be crushed as she made her way down the stairs and later outside. It did sound like a good 10-15 minutes before he was put down?

I now have an empty pillowcase beside my bed to shove my kitties into! Let's hope that if something ever happened, they'll be in my bed with me....hahaha - I am ridiculous I know, but my OCD has been really out of control lately. I probably shouldn't have read this one!

My old cat would have had no problem being carried outside he was so lovable - someone even tried to kidnap him.. too friendly for his own good. I never let my Cats sleep in my room because I hate having the door open and its not fair that they be shut in. I was thinking maybe getting a cat flap though

Not that this is a big deal, but has anyone noticed that in May 1999, two regular series books were published? Stacey's Movie and The Fire at Mary Anne's House. I remember getting them from the book order and they were sealed in a package together. But, at the time, I was too old to get book orders so I had to ask my next-door neighbour to buy them from me from her book order at a different school. She was two years younger than me, and I remember it being really embarrassing to ask her for the BSC books, obviously because everyone would know. And I'm a guy!
I wonder why they released them both in May and didn't wait for TFAMAH to come out in June?
Edited to add: Maybe they were rushing to get the series over (ha ha... tear)

Maybe it is different when they sense that they are in danger but I don't know. Not at all!! I just finished this book last night and the thing that stood out the most in my mind was how Tigger apparently never struggled... not realistic at all. Then again, maybe since he could sense the danger...? I've (thankfully) never had to rescue any pets from a house fire. I do make sure my cat's carrier is easy to get to, though, and if there ever were an emergency I would put her in that.

^Haha, it was a really tough choice, actually. I ultimately decided on mysteries next, because they're the ones I haven't read in the longest amount of time. (The Super Specials are frequent re-reads in my household, haha.) Currently on Beware Dawn
