It was too bad her family lost everything.

I thought the subplot to this was a good finale for the series. They did a lot of reminiscing about the club similar to what they did with Mallory in The All New Mallory Pike. I especially liked that they had old notebook entries included to spark some of the memories. As for the fire storyline, well, I don’t know anyone who doesn’t have some discomfort thinking about losing all of their belongings. The part that rang truest to me was right after they got out of the house and Sharon was like “My purse! My pictures!” They were the two things that immediately came to her mind, one for practical necessity and one for personal reasons. I think most kids have a fire safety talk in school and the question of “if you could grab anything when escaping from a fire besides family/pets, what would you take?” is often discussed. As an adult now I can say my purse would be one of those things I would try to grab. One pet peeve. Mary Anne apparently locks Tigger in her bedroom with her at night? She said multiple times in the series that he would wake her up in the morning to "play". The poor little guy was just bored to death and needed to pee, Mary Anne. Let him out of your room.

^I think it would have been better--definitely more endearing to me, anyway--had we gotten to read the final essay Kristy wrote and what the Charges compiled.
I may not like cats but jeez Mary Anne, way to take care of your beloved Tigger! This is sort of off topic but as I re-read for the zillionth time, it occurred to me that perhaps Mary Anne "chose" Dawn over Kristy in part because of location. Dawn lived closer to her and the two of them probably spent more time together than she and Kristy did. How this relates to Tigger being a prisoner is the thought that Mary Anne seems to either smother or rage at people/animals she cares about, sort of an "all or nothing" type of deal. Kristy tells Dawn in #10, that she (K) is aware of the fact that MA is "moving away from her (K)." Sadly, imo, MA by this time has already written off Kristy for Dawn but that's another topic.
ITA that a fire is definitely a fear of mine along with being robbed.

I love how the last book in the original BSC series is a Mary Anne book!

^ I definitely think it should have been a Kristy book. She started the series, and she should have ended it!

^I think it should have been a Kristy book, too. Maybe it could have also been a Super Special that gave us the Charges tributes, Kristy's essay, but also new info on the BSC and what its really meant to each of the girls and the charges/families, too. I reallly (still) think this should have come at the point that the older girls graduated SMS. That would have been an appropriate time for reflection and figuring out how to make the club work in high school. I will always wish, of course, the fire had never happened.

^That is true, too. No mansion burning. Really the farmhouse burning was probably Dawn's fault for her 100 watt light bulbs or Sharon's for buying the ancient home with the "faulty wiring" in the first place. I'm guessing Sharon never had the place re-wired or probably even looked at. :/

^Sharon did have the wiring checked. It was said either in this book or one of the first FF books something like the wiring was technically up to code but all the modern appliances may have overloaded it. They didn't use that exact phrasing, but that was the gist of it.

I am shocked. Although if this was in the FF, it was "too late." :/

I have funny memories about buying this book. I was too "Grown up" for the series when the time this book came out, and so I asked my next-door neigbhour -- who is younger than me -- to get it for me from the Scholastic book orders. It was kind of embarrassing, especially since I am a guy, and I remember going over to her house and picking them up from her and totally getting judged for it... haha...
The book came in a packaged deal with Stacey's Movie. Does anyone remember that?

Wow I forgot how much I actually did like this book. I thought that it was a fitting end b/c it seemed like the winds of change were blowing. Yes, it did leave things unsettled, but I liked that about it. Life isn't a neat little package as they normally write in the BSC books, so I guess this one just seemed more realistic to me.
I am terrified of fires as well and I think of trying to save my cats if something happened and I'm scared I wouldn't be able to. This is not a good book for someone like me to read with my OCD acting up! I will unplug all my appliances now!
Anyway - this is my reread end now except I am moving on to the FF series, but I really do love these girls. There are so many books that I thought - ugh, but in the end I guess I enjoy slipping away into Stoneybrook which is so unlike my real life.

i book this book from zany brainy. that's where i bought goblet of fire too, which seems like an odd combination.
how lucky was it that tigger was right there next to MA when she woke up? i know he sleeps in MA's room, but he could have wandered off easily. if he were somewhere else, i know she would have gone looking for him. i would run through any fire (or burglars, or anything else) to save my dog. and i promise if you ever need to save your cats, you will find a way to do it, wiggir!
