yeah I agree and have always believed that it's not supposed to complete you, you have to feel complete with or without someone, always, never rely on the other person for anything....

I believe I have seen this Travis guy in a show called "To Catch a Predator!". I think this kid was a creeper from the word go. As a younger girl, I remember thinking - oh an older boy could like me too! Oh My Lord was I delusional and dumb to want that!
Does anyone else see this book as a very bad internet story if it were written nowadays?

Travis wasn't yet an adult, now Georgio from Haunted House, interested in a 13 year old? Paging Chris Hansen.

Well he wasn't an adult, but I am pretty sure I know what is on a 16 year old boys mind and I don't think it was a makeover.....

^Not at all. Even though I thought Georgio (overall) seemed like a better person than Travis, I didn't buy that he truly believed Claudia was 17 wasn't it? Even if he thought she was 16, he was in his second year? of college at 19. Unless he was a complete dunce and/or was thinking solely with his thingie, there's no way in heck he could have thought Claud's parents would have let her come visit him. She barely knew him. Her parents had never met him. I admit a scene featuring Claudia asking permission to visit Georgio might have been one instance where a BSC parent behaved as such!

Boy crazy. Too many boys. Older boy. Perfect boy. Boys boys boys!
No one has mentioned this, but the two little girls on the cover remind me of little Kristy (red and white shirt) and Mary Anne (green shirt). Notice how little Mary Anne not only has pigtails but if you chopped them off, she would have the *exact same haircut* that Mary Anne is pictured with on the covers with the *exact same bangs*.
I thought it was weird how Travis knew so much about earrings and jewellery and picked them out for Dawn. What straight guy does that? But then I realized he must have seen them while shopping with Sara. So it didn't make it as weird in my book. And I don't know if he actually liked Dawn romantically but rather as a person. Kind of like a little sister? But in a creepier way?

I re-read this book recently though I would read it often years ago. He seems really clingy, possessive, self-righteous and full of himself. I think he's just friendly with the girls, like a ladies man, and believe it or not, there are some guys out there who are straight that pay attention to details. They are capable of doing it for women if they are grooming themselves and their cars all day.

Yeah, I think Travis was really hard to read on what his intentions were. This would be even more complicated for kids in Grade 4 (as the reading level suggests).

Probably, but it could also instill the important lesson to girls that some (not all) guys could take advantage of you.

I still think that's a pretty mature topic for Grade 4. Grade 7, 8 reading - no, but for junior-to-intermediate level, yes. But because I'm in my late 20s, I can't really say what is-or-isn't mature for kids now a days.

Some kids do start thinking of those things around grade 4, and some later on. I don't remember when I got this book, I think it was in grade 5, but it wasn't until 7-8 and after I was enjoying the high school plots over the majority of baby sitting ones, and by then, I wasn't adding to my collection anymore, just re-reading what I had over and over and reading other books about issues people in that age group faced.

Ugh this was so bad, I hurried through it this afternoon. One very funny moment was David Michael and Andrew using a pair of fake teeth to do "Morse Code." For once, both boys had a more active role in a game (Camping). James' play was a great and original idea that never took off. I was disappointed by that. Dawn stuff was bleh. I hated how Sara seemed to be laughing at Dawn along with Travis at the end making it sound like she really was "in" on Travis' "joke." Awful.

This book still makes me cringe. I feel like I would have liked to see dawn run into Travis again and kristies house for an awkward Convo.
Did anyone really think dawn got him by calling him and telling him what she did? I'm sure he just thought she was crazy but I guess she got it off her chest so good for her.

^From the little we read of his end of their conversation, it sounded like he was still trying to (I think he even said this) get her to see it his way. So, no, I'm not sure her call made any impact on him other than (maybe) he semi realized whatever his intents were had not quite worked out how he had hoped. Since Dawn acts pretty much the same way with Lewis, I'm not sure she "learned" anything either. Of course, Lewis thinks of "health food and movie stars" when CA comes to his mind. When I think of CA, I think of either Disneyland or where I went to college up North. Yeah, in between current times and those past with family. The only time I think of "stars" is whenever I see a tour bus filled with folks. As for health food...I better not go there.
ETA, O/T, the opening scene at the sleepover where Stacey almost faints or is short breath or something that caused notice, was scary. It made it seem like something was definitely going on.
