Haha, that was funny! This title is missleading, and I feel bad for Jackie anyway. Disaster is a strong word!

I just reread this book yesterday and I think the title should have been "Kristy and The Krushers" instead of "Kristy and the Walking Disaster." Jackie was not in this book nearly as much as the title would make you think. Also, there were 20 kids on the team, but only 9 kids on the cover. I guess that was to make Jackie stand out more as the Walking Disaster among a bunch of neat and tidy kids. Or painting 20 kids was too much work for Hodges. It's ridiculous that Gabbie is on the team. She's two and a half, for crying out loud! And of COURSE Myriah is a decent player. Everything about the Perkinses was absolutely perfect! I also hated Karen and her brattiness over "Krushers" and "Crushers." Just STFU and wear a shirt with the name spelled the way it should be. Yes, it's spelled incorrectly, but get a grip. Dawn mistakenly calling the other team the "Blasters" was funny.

I think I would have been like Karen in this one. Well, I would have worn the Krushers shirt, but would have been thinking "Crushers" in my head the whole time. Did it ever say who the Bashers played against before the Krushers came along?

I only read this book once, at the library a year or so ago. ITA that Jackie was not in the book nearly enough to have it named for him. This was an early book that I was looking forward to reading because I had never read it as a kid, and I thought there was going to be an interesting Jackie plot, and...there really wasn't. I think I liked reading about Kristy's Bart crush, though.

This book is the reason I am now commonly known as "The Walking Disaster."
I <3 Jackie. I bet he grew up to be a real sweetheart.
Hm, with the Bashers maybe they were just all playing one day and Bart was helping them and they thought "Hey! Let's make a team!" They probably just played against each other though.
Watson was really lovely in this book.
I think there was another book where "Crushers" was mentioned, but can't remember where!

On the cover of Kristy and the Copycat you can see that Karen's shirt says "Crushers" on it, is that what you're thinking of?

I don't think so, I remember it being in the text and the narrator explaining it. I'm in the UK anyway and would have had a different cover

I also remember one of the Super Specials had an illustration of Karen up to bat at a Krushers game, and you could see that her shirt said "Crushers." I think it might be SS #10.

We didn't have the illustrations here. Ah, this is really annoying me now because I can't remember! *head desk*

I loved this book, this time around. I am both a Kristy and baseball fan. Said before, I'd have enjoyed helping her with the Krushers though I don't possess her athletic skills. I wish we had gotten to read the conversation between Kristy and Watson when she approached him about setting up the team and ones that followed. This would have been a great time to "see" their bond.
My favorite "littler" moment was when Myriah, Gabbie, and Jamie, agreed not "to be mean back" to the Bashers. Made them all seem so sweet and real. That said, unless Bart was completely a dolt, how could he have not been aware of ANY of his Bashers rude remarks toward the Krushers? I don't buy that or the fact that despite not being sure he knew or due to her crush, Kristy didn't point out to him what was happening and demand he stop it.
ITA that there really wasn't a reason for the Bashers existence outside of plot device. They all should have been in Little League.
Also, didn't care for Karen's decree of not using the "C." To each their own, sure, no big deal. Just that she seemed to make a big deal of everyone else's choice for spelling Krushers with a "K."
Finally, this book indeed should have been called "Kristy and the Krushers."

I'm making this a seperate post since my above reply is a) already too long and b) un-related to this.

"pretty much money?" i remember MA using that phrase in one of the early books, but i can't remember which. it seems awkward. when i say pretty much i mean "for the most part" or something, not "a lot."

^That's what I meant, it is awkward/odd wording. To me "pretty much" is used to mean "that pretty much sums it up." However even that is semi antiquated? I'd be more likely to say "that says it all" or something to that effect. I took the BSC's "pretty much money" to mean "we (the BSC) didn't make a ton or even a lot of money but they did earned some and did well. I think that's what confused me about Marilyn and Carolyn. Even in 1989 when #21 was published, a pair of jeans and a sweatshirt must have cost a good $30 at a department store? I don't think Target was around as much then or Old Navy. "Bellair's" sounded more like a "real" (Macy's, Sears, etc) type store anyway. Marilyn's pink jean skirt and blouse might have been a little less but not much.

I finished Kristy and the Mother's Day Surprise last night and found another example of "pretty much."
Page 37 Kristy says:
Dawn nods in agreement.
The BSC ends up deciding each kid can do 3 things at the carnival. 21 kids came. Pretending each kid used $1, that's still $21 plus fees for the 7 sitters. They probably spent $30 at Sudsy's and possibly some extra to give Claudia for art supplies. The BSC Treasury only racks up $6 a week X 4 weeks is only $24. Dawn must be an even better money hoarder than Stacey to have saved ALL the dues from over a month!
