I just reread this one and it is definitely not my favorite. It was cute the Sam and Stacey storyline, but good grief Jessi. It really pissed me off how they all just didn't talk to her or let her sit around not talking. I would've called her out for being stupid.
I loved that Cokie had some chapters. It was funny to read some negatives about the BSC girls.
I love at the end how Dawn is self reflecting about not being the center of attention but not a follower. Give it up Dawn.

I just read this one for the first time a few days ago. I'm surprised I hadn't read it earlier as a theatre major!
I liked it, but there were a couple of parts that were kinda weird for me. Namely, Jessi being such a primadonna about the whole thing. I know a lot of people like that (and have been that way myself at a particular point in my life) but I just never saw any indication throughout the rest of the series that Jessi was that way.
The Jackie Rodowsky thing was weird, too. I would have seen Claire Pike as more likely to be afraid of the crocodile than Jackie. Also Jenny Prezzioso, but she was too young for the play.
As eye-rollingly annoying as the Dawn plot was, it actually fit very well with her character. It was actually annoying enough to be funny for me!
Even with Cokie having her own chapter, I still pictured her steepling her fingers a la Montgomery Burns as she plotted insults against the girls. "Eeexcellent."

I'm only halfway through re-reading this, and I apologize if this was mentioned earlier in the thread, but I cracked up laughing when I read Claudia's first journal entry, where she writes, "Stace wanted to be in the play, but she did not want to be Sam's husband." Well, Claudia, I'm not entirely shocked she didn't want to be his husband, haha. I can't decide if that supposed to be a Claudia error or an editing one.

Stacey as a Drag King would have been funny.

Just read this one for the first time! It's not one I had read as a kid, so yay for new BSC experiences.
I actually didn't mind the crazy Jessi plot in this one. She was acting like a jerk, but the characters acknowledged she was acting like a jerk, so that's probably why I can accept it. There are tons of BSC books where one of the girls will act absolutely ridiculous (y'know, like psychotic Mary Anne in SS#12, or crazy Stacey in SS#14), and it always results in one of two extremes: 1) None of the other sitters seem to be bothered that their friend is an effing psycho, or 2)The other sitters get all huffy and an I'm-not-speaking-to-you fight ensues for the rest of the book. In this one, the other sitters recognize Jessi is being a diva, and they call her out on it and give her some time and space to get over herself.
And as ridiculous as Jessi was being, I find it believable that an 11-year-old would get sulky over something like that, and then do something dramatic like "That's it! I'm crossing my name out of the program!" *sob*
I also really liked that they acknowledged that Jessi is a great dancer, but not a great actor or singer. If only more of the ghostwriters could have followed this lead! I *like* having characters that have talents and faults, instead of being super talented at everything!
I too wanted to punch Jackie. So annoying.
I've never seen anything related to the Peter Pan musical before (although I love the original novel), so I watched the Ugg-a-Wugg song on Youtube, since AMM mentioned it like a hundred times in the book. It is so weird. Man, does Ann have odd taste.

^ Actually, Jessi's reaction was pretty realistic for her age range, come to think of it. When I was in 5th grade (maybe 6th?) I tried out for the school play. There was a part I was DYING to get, but in the end, I was cast in another (smaller) role). I refused to take it. I kind of regret that, looking back: it was my only chance to be in a real play, although I didn't know that back then.

Reading a BSC book for the first time would be an incredibly awesome experience. I love reading ones where I forget about the storyline, or plot line, and things seem new to me.

Actually, virtually all of the BSC books I'm reading now (and have been reading over the last year or two) have been ones I never read as a kid! When I was little, I think I stopped reading the series when they hit around #60, maybe read 1 or 2 in the 70s, so there's a ton I haven't read. I still have a pile of almost 40 books (all from thrift stores and book sales) to be read.

^ You're exactly where I was a few years back! I stopped reading at the same point in the series, and while I checked out a few of the later books from the library, it wasn't until Graduation Day came out that I got interested in collecting as an adult. This book, however, was one that I owned and read the heck out of! I was such a wannabe drama nerd.

I tried. I read about half of this last night before giving up. Could Jessi be anymore annoying? As others have said, it seems like almost anytime she speaks something is "wrong" because she is not the center of attention. Hey maybe she and Dawn should get together on that. I apologize that may be mean but all of you know how much I "love" Dawn.
As Sparklymouse said up-thread, I also normally prefer the Stoneybrook books minus some of the far-fetched mysteries. I enjoy reading about the girl's regular lives. I think this one could have been awesome since it seemed to involve kids from all the schools. Instead it was mainly sniping both internal and in Logan's case mutiny on the ship.

I never get tired of Kristy telling Jessi "Oh, be quiet. You sound like a horse."
