No, they didn't go up as high back then. I think the highest you could get at the time was 60. I have Mallory's colouring, therefore I burn like Mary Anne. I don't burn wearing SPF 110, though, so I don't need to put on stuff like MA's crazy caftan over my swimsuit!

I was born in 1980 and I don't remember anything higher than 45 when I was a kid so I do think that was supposed to be a joke.

Well, I re-read this book again. Anytime, I read Claudia's postcard to her parents & Jeanie. Who are you? Cracks me up.
Tell more later.

^ It would be funny to see Janine's reaction to "Who Are You? " when reading the postcard. We always see Claud's perspective on how she "puts up with" Janine, so it would be cool to see it from Janine's perspective in "putting up with" Claudia.

^I would love to see that, Virgo. I also have wondered what Claud's parents thought of her asking them who they were. The other thing, do you think Claudia herself ever realized her mistake after mailing? I'd like to give her family the benefit of the doubt that they didn't want to embarrass her. Because (early on) this happened a few times, there could have been even a passing scene between Rioko and John--not that Stoneybrook parents talk about their kids' much but you know.

Virgo, that will be funny to see. Janine's reaction. Janine: *reading the post card from Claudia.* (Surprise face, her younger sister doesn't know her.) *talking her to self.* It's, How are you? Not, Who are you? *Shaking her head.* I heard in California, items cost more than any other states. If, your buying make-up from a department store. (mall) It's going be higher than a drug store. Since, your paying the department prices. Mary-Anne & Kristy baby-sitting was boring. Little mini of Mary-Anne. Kristy, thinks she knows all baby-sitting experts. reading other posts on here. Stacey, has more than 1 car accidents, in other Super Special? Which book is that?

^Stacey was in a helicopter accident in "Aloha Baby-sitters." Kristy and Claudia had "car trouble" with Charlie and his girlfriend in "Mind Your Own Business, Kristy." I didn't know Stacey was involved in a second car accident. Scary.

Stacey and Maureen were stranded in their car in Snowbound, I think that's what you're referring to

I did just post in the Carol thread and in relation to this book. I wanted to say directly about this book how very cool it was that some of the people the BSC members wrote post-cards to wrote them back! I don't ever remember that happening before. Also loved Vanessa's poem (and that she wrote in the first place)to Mal. Janine really was wonderful in this book. I wish we had gotten to read about Claud sharing some CA trip memories with her sister or maybe bringing her a souvenir or even some photos to look at. This isn't one of my very favorite super specials but it did have some sweet and different/extra moments to it.

This used to be my favourite but not so much anymore. I enjoyed Mallory and I hate Carol's advice about boys. You hsoud never ever change for a boy. Its basically a rule of thumb. I agreed with Dawn on this one.
I hated Jessi in this super special. She should have been more supportive of Mal, not rolling her eyes at her and sighing loudly. That irritated me. Poor Mallory.

The other morning I saw the episode of I Love Lucy that's mentioned in the chapter where they're on the plane and talking about what they want to do in CA. Stacey says she wants to go Grauman's Chinese Theatre and Claudia says, "yeah, only we won't try to steal John Wayne's footprints." It was a pretty funny episode

New member here. First post. Male, too.
I just re-read this for the first time in over ten years. This time around I spotted a mistake. In Chapter 9, when Jessie is getting ready for the Masters to pick her up to bring her to the studio, she makes a sarcastic reference to Mallory's blonde hair, but according to Mallory in the previous chapter, she got her makeover on the same day that Jessi went with the Masters, so she shouldn't have been blonde yet. In the first paragraph of Chapter 8, Mallory writes:
"Boy, was this morning ever hectic! We all went off in different directions. First, Derek and his father picked up Jessi to take her to the TV studio. Then Stacey left to go surfing. Mary Anne was getting ready to sit for Stephie Robertson, and Claudia was a wreck. She was going out to lunch with Terry, and I have never seen anyone so nervous. Jeff went over to Rob's house -- and then Carol appeared."
She then goes on to say how Carol took her, Kristy, Dawn, and Jeff to the mall, where Mallory got her makeover. (Jeff had returned, after he and Rob got into a fight over who was the bigger Deadhead.)
Then in the next chapter, Jessi recounts what she did that same day. In the fourth paragraph, she writes:
"I knew that Derek would be coming by early in the morning, so I ate breakfast while everyone was still getting up. When I heard a horn honk, I shrieked, 'They're here!' 'I wonder why the chauffeur didn't come to the door for you,' said Mal. I looked at my blonde friend. I couldn't even answer her. I just ran outside and saw -- a station wagon driven by Derek's father."

BTW: As a vegetarian myself, I too found it annoying how inconsistent they were with Dawn's so-called vegetarianism. Yes, I realize that there are various types of vegetarians. For example, 'pescetarians' eat fish, but no poultry nor red meat, and 'pollotarians' eat poultry but no fish nor red meat. But Dawn ate chicken (as in this Super Special) and fish (as in the "Island Adventure" SS), and I recall another instance when she got a spaghetti plate with sauce containing beef, and she just ate around the pieces of meat. Please! A true vegetarian would never touch it.
Anyway, I think she would've been better off labeled as a 'flexitarian,' which refers to someone whose diet is one that is plant-based with the occasional inclusion of meat products. Personally, I roll my eyes at flexitarians. Either be a vegetarian or not. You can't have your cake and eat it, too -- or in this case, your meat and eat it, too. Well, you can eat whatever you want, but don't call yourself a "vegetarian." *end rant*

Someone several pages back inquired why, in the book, they sometimes wrote "We <3 Kids Club" or "We Heart Kids Club" and found it irritating that they couldn't stick to one. The answer is, they only did the latter when quoting someone's dialog; the narrator used the former. For example, in Chapter 3, Kristy narrates:
"Sunny Winslow is Dawn's best friend in California. She and two of her friends have started their own baby-sitting club. It's called the We <3 Kids Club, and it's based on the BSC."
In the next paragraph, she continues and quotes Dawn:
"A Few minutes later, I heard Dawn hang up the phone. She ran back to her patio, where we were eating. 'Guess what, you guys. Sunny invited us over today. Does the BSC want to meet the We Love Kids Club'?"
The author does the same with "911" vs "nine-one-one." The former is only used when the protagonist is narrating, and the latter is used when someone in the book is being quoted.
BTW: I agree with Kristy that "We <3 Kids Club" is a stupid name! First of all, it's very saccharine. Secondly, I never knew whether to pronounce it "We Love Kids Club" or "We Heart Kids Club." Last but not least, I hated saying "kids club" in succession. Something about two 'cah' sounds, one right after the other, doesn't sit well with me.

Welcome! It's been a while since I've read this book so I'm vague on the details, but it sounds like a good catch about the Mallory makeover mistake!
