Was just thinking that there aren’t any real “tomboys” among the charges – not like Kristy was when she was a kid or at least none I can think of. They make a big deal aobut Jenny being very prissy but not about any of the girls being really “tough.” I get the impression that Suzi and Claire might be a little but not to the same extent as most books and movies have a stereotypical “tomboy” girl who does everything with the boys. And this isn’t unrealistic to have one like Kristy because that’s how my mom says she was as a kid. Would have been very interesting if they would have made Margo a real “tomboy” (she needs some trait or personality anyway) and Nicky very sensitive. That could have caused some real conflict, I think.

I never realized that but you're right. I wish they would have made one of the girls like Kristy. I was a tomboy just like her growing up. I didn't really have a choice with 4 older brothers.

Lou McNally was, but she was only in two books.

I thought Hayley Braddock was tomboy-ish, but maybe it was just her butch haircut.

^ I never got the impression that Hayley was particularly tomboyish but she was "tough" and always ready for a fight, it seemed. Other times, though, she seemed more "girly" than what I was thinking of for an actual Kristy equivalent. I can never picture Kristy being a cheerleader of any kind. ;D I'm not sure if Lou was actually a "tomboy" or also just really tough because she was very, very troubled (my dad just read Best Kid Ever and totally agreed with this. She had some major problems.)

I think she was a tomboy to begin with. She was brought up in a house with her father and older brother with no female role model at all. Although that's not always the case with girls in all-male families, but it could account to why she's so tomboyish. For example, her short haircut, hatred of wearing skirts and dresses, her love of sports and in Kristy and the Worst Kid Ever (I haven't read Best Kid Ever), she seemed more comfortable playing with the boys than the girls... although at the end of the book, she did play with the girls.

I think Hayley wasn't a prissy girl and was kind of tough but definitely less of a tomboy than someone like Kristy. I laugh every time I think of Kristy wearing a dress and being a cheerleader (though my mom - who was a huge tomboy- pointed out that cheerleading is a sport and that's why she was a cheerleader since there weren't many other girls sports back then - I think she really liked doing that because her uniform counted for my grandma's 3 dresses a week rule ;D)

Haley definitely seemed tomboy-ish to me. So did Kerry Bruno, but that could be because she spells her name like a boy. (My name is Kari and I always thought Kerry/Cary were only for guys.)

Hehe, I always liked the spelling of "Kerry" and thought it was pretty girly. Karen, Hannie, and Nancy have matching dolls in LS and their names are Kerry, Terry, and Merry.

I agree that Margo could have filled that role nicely

^ I remember when they get the "doll sisters" too but can't remember what book right now. I'd love to know, too, though. ;D

Karen's Cartwheel. One of my favorites as a kid...

^ Thanks. I love that one, too, and will have to read it soon. ;D Karen, Hannie and Nancy are definitely not stereotypical tomboys, in my opinion. Actually, I don't see any BSC charges who really are. Wish we knew more about Kerry Bruno. She might qualify but really isn't ever mentioned enough to know.
