^ Agree that I don't think it's a big deal. I also think you guys are a bit younger, though, than us who didn't get as many dual enrollment opportunties ;D When the books were published, it was a bigger deal to take college classes while in HS (it did still happen a lot, though, just not nearly as much). I'd better not get started on this topic because it is a point of slight bitterness for me. ;D As for Janine, I felt for her in Sad Goodbye when it kind of seemed like her family didn't want her involved. I also enjoy studying and reading, etc, and sometimes my family (extended not immediate) makes me feel like it's a waste of time or like they think I'm so "overwhelmed" and can't do anything with them. I also liked Janine's differing reaction to Claudia's after Mimi's death. I thought it did a lot to show how different people handle things differently.

I think thirteen-year-olds would have been realistically impressed with the idea of OMG COLLEGE while still being in high school, at least when the books were written.

When i was in hiigh school we had AP courses..but we didn't have actual courses at any community college where I was at in St. Louis. Down here though they do, in fact there's a high school senior that's now in my college choir thing and i did a "Whoa"

I thought it was so cute in Claudia’s Book how Janine was eating the letters out of her alphabet soup and Mimi was teaching her to spell Claudia when Claudia was born. I also thought it was really nice how Janine tried to make Claud feel better when no one showed up to the party. She always seems like a truly caring, loving big sister and Claudia is pretty unfair to her, obviously because she is so jealous. I think if she would get over that, like she might have started to in the later books, she and Janine could almost become friends or at least have a good relationship.

Found another Janine chapter that I really liked in Phantom Phone Calls when she comes in and wants to talk to Claudia at the end. It's obvious that she's trying to have a relationship with Claudia and it's too bad Claud doesn't realize that until much later in the series and is so mean in books like Mean Janine. I also enjoyed seeing how Janine's character seemed to evolve from book #2 through the rest of the series.

I always thought it was weird that Janine mentions in CatPPC that she also hides junk food in her room, and then it was never mentioned again.

I was thinking it was mentioned again but maybe I'm thinking of this book both times??? Was it in Mean Janine? For some reason, that's where I remember it from (but might be imagining things ;D)

I think it's depressing how in Phantom Phone Calls there's this subplot about Claudia getting to know Janine better, and then THE VERY NEXT CLAUDIA BOOK is Claudia Hates Her Sister. Geez, Claudia, you can't learn anything in or out of school.

I don't see the big deal about Janine taking a college class or two. I took English Comp at a local community college my senior year to get it out of the way.

I absolutely love Janine! Possibly the character I'd most get along with in real life (though I have a sneaking suspicion she would dislike me). I thought it was infinitely sweet how she kept running over to Rosie Wilder's house to help her with her homework. And so modest too --> "Hi," replied Rosie. "You're good at science?" "Pretty good," said Janine. That was an understatement! "She's won all kinds of awards," I blurted out. "Yeah?" said Rosie. Janine sat down next to her. "Sort of. What do you need help in?"
Yeah, Janine kicks ass.

^ I also really liked Janine in that book and feel the same way about probably getting along with her in real life. I think she puts up with so much from Claudia and Claudia is really unfair to her in a lot of books (mostly because she is so jealous).

Janine kinda bugs me, her character mannerisms. Just because she is smart, she automatically dresses like nerd, cannot relate to people who are 'not smart' and is just super by the book and rigid.
I dislike, how genius characters are always nerdy and lack personality. Although, I have known genius people in real life, and they really were bitchy, talked down to you, acted superior, talked superior and were nerdy dressers. So perhaps, the idea behind the 'nerd superiorness' does exsist, or how else do we stereotype?
BUT alternatively, I have known genius smarties who were NOT mean, could relate to the common man, dressed stylishly and all. They were well rounded and lovable.
Janine, sadly, seems to be the superior mind who does not realize she's acting better than you. Its one of those traits that some smart minded people do not realize they are being jerks and making others feel inferior. Such as this one guy I knew in middle school. I got quite angry with him for always talking down to me and his peers and friend that i yelled at him for making all of us feel so stupid. His reaction was quite innocent and he didnt' realize his impression he was making on people.
Janine could be like that, it is like she probably does not realize how much she's overreacting to some people. In her own way, she is probably trying to be helpful but in the eyes of someone who is not super academic, they don't always see it that way. It can be humiliating to be constantly corrected, like Claudia must feel.
