Too bad they didn’t develop the friendship between Rosa – Claudia’s tutor in Middle School Dropout – and Janine. I think this would have been interesting because I noticed while rereading Middle School Dropout that Claudia describes Rosa not as a stereotypical nerd (not in those exact words but with that meaning). She even “approves” of Rosa’s outfit and seems to think she’s pretty cool – not weird like she thinks Janine is. I would have liked to see more friends for Janine – especially ones who weren’t the stereotypical nerds. Maybe this would have made her change some, too. Was Rosa ever mentioned again? Did she keep tutoring Claudia? I think Claud could use all the help she could get…. ;D

Another cool thing Janine did: In Claudia and the Genius of Elm Street, she bought one of Claudia's paintings at the art show. I thought that was really sweet, and seemed like she was trying to make another effort to connect with her sister.

Right, I loved that! Also don't know if this has been mentioned, but she's the first of Claudia's family to congratulate her on her WSTO radio show, and toasts her at dinner.

Janine always seems proud and supportive when Claudia does something good. Claudia doesn't give her sister enough credit.

I'm pretty sure that this was already mentioned, but I think that it was really interesting to see that it was Janine who helped Claudia out of her being accused of cheating when her parents initially didn't do a thing.

^ I know, Claudia's parents often disappoint me in that sense.

^ Me too. A lot of times, it seems like Janine does more for Claud while they are either oblivious or unwilling to get involved. I really don't care for the Kishi parents but love Janine.

I thought she was really annoying in Kristy's Great Idea. I can see where the girls would get annoyed with her correcting their grammar all the time.

I don't really remember her doing it that much after the earliest books.

^ Me neither. It would probably have been somewhat annoying if she did that all the time or always acted like a bossy know-it-all. I have an aunt who does this, even though she is usually wrong (she once got in an argument with me saying that NYC USED to be the capital of NY - back when she was in school for a few years - and this woman is a TEACHER!) Anyway, at least Janine is usually right ;D I don't think she means to correct people, either, and doesn't do it to show off. I think it's more a habit for her. I guess I’m used to this, though, because my dad does it all the time without meaning to (though it does annoy me and I yell at him for doing it ;D) and I think I do it more than I should, especially to my mom.

^ I think that she thinks that people like to be corrected sometimes because people want to know the correct way of things like she does. Sorry if this doesn't make sense.

^ It makes sense. I think you mean that Janine likes learning things so assumes everyone does. Agree and can relate to this because I feel like this a lot of times, too.

I liked Janine a lot (though not when I first started reading). But I never found what was so impressive about Janine being a high school junior and GASP! being in college classes. I know a lot of juniors or seniors who have dual enrollment in the local community college or governor's school. I know even more who take AP classes, which count for college credit. I mean, I took my first AP class in my sophomore year. So I never understood why the BSC girls constantly talked about Janine's college classes. I'm sure Mary Anne or Stacey could have taken a course in college after 8th grade or a little later.

I know a friend who was in band, the football team, working at a glass factory, was taking college classes, and maintained a 4.0 gpa while he was in his Junior and Senior year of high school, so I don't think that it would have been that impressive to have Janine be in high school and taking college classes.
p.s. All of those things were just things he said he did, so I don't know if it is true or not.
