Maybe this is a little too far out, but I've been thinking about the whole Charlie driving Kristy to meetings thing. I do agree that it is a little weird that he's so readily available, but maybe he's not allowed to go out or do much during the week on school nights? Sure, he's got extracurricular activities, but he also has homework, chores, etc. Maybe he did prefer to stay at home during the week and go out on the weekends... who knows? I think it's entirely possible given what he was used to... taking care of the family.
Either way, I don't think he's your typical teenager or he probably would have rebelled.

Karen mentions that Charlie and Sam both frequently go off and do things on the weekends, so there's somehting in what you say.

Didn't it seem like Charlie would be a great baby-sitter? Janine takes a job for the club at one point, but Charlie never does (as far as I know), and I think it would have been cool if another older sibling had. He always seemed so calm and practical around kids, like in Kristy and the Haunted Mansion.

Charlie is my favorite other character. (he was like older brother to me, I never have. Like role model.)

It wasn't really a sitting job, but Charlie did help out with the Krushers in Mind Your Own Business, Kristy. It was cute because all the kids idolized him.
Are Charlie and Sam so inseparable that they have to share a thread? Seriously though, did those two ever have a fight? They were written like Siamese twins in the Little Sister books.

There's one Little Sister book where Charlie and Sam fight through the entire thing. I know it's a Halloween one. Karen's Haunted House, maybe? I just remember it was one of the books I was reading last October and I was confused the whole way through the book because Charlie and Sam just couldn't stand each other at all.

it always bugged me too that charlie and sam were so inseparable. maybe it's different for boys but my sister and i fought like crazy at 15 and 17 (and we still do.) i think it's just a sign of laziness that the writers would send charlie and sam to the same basketball games or friend's house, just so it would take less thinking.

I have a suspicion they were possibly written that way (mainly) because they were not BSC Members but also because they were male characters. It seems like Ann focused more attention on her female characters than the male ones. I am re-reading the early books and in almost every description of Karen and Andrew, for example, Karen's comes first is a good paragraph. Andrew's is maybe one or two sentences. As was often the case she took the stage and he didn't. But then later on David Michael was cast aside as well.
Of course, most 3-kid families were 2 girls and one boy, one of the girls a "baby" in BSC-Land even though she was 2 or close to. (Marnie for example). The one thing I liked about Jessi's Secret Language is that is was more evenly based with both Haley and Matt making new friends.
I agree that a Charlie sitting story would have been great to read. In Kristy and the Snobs, Sam also came across as a fun-loving but caring brother so I think underneath his often joking, teasing demure, he was a good guy, as well.

I feel a little sorry for Charlie. It seems like he was robbed of his childhood when Patrick ran out on the family.

i just posted in claudia's thread about how none of the older siblings have jobs, and it got me thinking. sam has a summer job delivering groceries, but he's only 15. he isn't old enough for his license. does he physically carry groceries all over town? that sounds exhausting. or maybe he attaches the groceries to his bike, but he would still have to make a ton of trips. i don't know if i missed the explanation for this one, but maybe somebody can explain.

I don't know if it was ever explained. I always pictured Sam delivering by bike, but yeah, that would take a lot of trips back and forth to the store.

For whatever reason I always pictured Sam pulling a wagon around with the groceries in it, but yes, it confuses me too.
Sam and Charlie both have jobs sometimes in the Little Sister books. In one of them Sam gets a dishwashing job and Charlie does deliveries for an auto parts store, another time they run a snow removal business, Sam gets a paper route, and a few others I think.

I absolutely love Charlie and Sam! They really crack me up. I would love to have them as my big brothers. They're so helpful to Mrs. Thomas and are so good with the younger kids. Mrs. Thomas did something right - especially for a single mom. Go Mrs. Thomas!

At my grocery stores the baggers take the groceries out and load them into your car for you. That's kind of what I pictured Sam doing, although I wouldn't really call the job "delivering" groceries.
