I think that after Mimi died, Claudia and her parents became closer. I would've liked it if Claudia found candy in her parent's room or vice versa. It could've made for an interesting story.

What would have been funny would be if they were given a lot of sweets as gifts, such as hostess gifts for an aduts' party....non too farfetched since it happens every year when my foljs give their Christmas party!

^Lol, that would have been great. I still would have loved to see Claud confront her dad in Claudia and the World's Cutest Baby when he bought m and m's for Peaches saying she needed to kepe her strength up. I definitely think if the Kishis attended any sort of holiday party they had to have been given candy/cookies/even a tin of popcorn. Also, the BSC had a few library parties for the kids. I don't remember Mrs. Kishi outlawing junk then.

I don't think the Kishis "outlawed" it- they got cakes often enough! Just moderate amounts!

^True they did along with some type of cinnamon bun for breakfast. The thing is we never heard Claud's parents tell her not to eat sugar or other junk food. I think if they truly were are strict about that as Claud sometimes made them out to be there'd be no way they wouldn't have caught onto her stash.

Wow! That's almost exactly what I pictured the Kishi house to look like too! With a few tweaks here and there it would be right on.
Even the interior looks a lot how I imagined it, especially the kitchen. I can see Mimi and Claudia having one of their talks there.

Mr. Kishi looks like a hot Asian guy (judging from his photo in "Claudia's Scrapbook")

I never imagined Mr. Kishi as being hot! I always thought of him as old and stuffy looking. I'll have to check this out!

I think if they truly were are strict about that as Claud sometimes made them out to be there'd be no way they wouldn't have caught onto her stash. I remember Claudia happily saying the cinnamon rolls were like having junk food for breakfast and her mom just smiled and said "The more it's like junk food, the more you want to eat it," but not as if that were a terrible thing. I imagined her to be saying it in a fond way.

^ Yeah, the Kishis seem to be all over the place at times. I just read Claudia and the Sad Goodbye and she talks about the Nancy Drew books placed on her bookcase. But then in some books it says she has to hide them.

I liked how invested Mr. Kishi was in his in-laws. When Mimi was sick you couldn't even tell whose mother she was because he was just as attentive and affected as Mrs. Kishi was. That, and his frenzy over Peaches in labor was cute. I know that's not necessarily uncommon, but my family's two sides don't interact at all.

I like Mr and Mrs Kishi quite a lot. Theytry hard and I agree they don't intentionally make Claudia feel bad or alone but I think that's just the kind of people they are, they're smart and they probably have trouble adjusting their vocabulary even when they're at home. As far as the junk food goes I think that maybe they don't like Claudia eating lots of processed junk food but are okay with things like cake and waffles because they (if homemade or from a bakery) don't have all of the artificial colourings and additives of lollies.

As an aside, there ought to be words for those people whose daughter & son are married to each other (ie, what is my FIL to my dad?) An essayist I read once suggested "yafney" and I suppose the female is "yafnin".
