My little cousin just told me that she had some candy bars for her friend's little brother last night and his mom took them and put them in her pocket. My cousin said "and I know she just took them because she ate them then. She always eats his candy." I had to laugh because I started thinking that maybe this is the real reason that Claudia hides her junk food - her parents "confiscate" it and then secretly eat it. ;D The Kishi parents - secret junk food addicts? Addictions do tend to run in families.... ;D ;D

^ That would be so hillarious! Haha imagine if the Kishis just ALL hid chocolate around their bedrooms ;D I know that at least Janine and Claud do.

I wonder why we never see Claudia's parents saying anything about junk food/nancy drew. It's not as if Mrs. Kishi entered Claud's room during a meeting and saw what was going on. I would have loved to see that -- Mrs. Kishi needing to remind Claudia about something and then seeing all the doritos and oreos, with the hollow book lying open on the floor. Or...they could have shown Claudia sitting down to dinner and her parents asking her if she's not eating her dinner because she had some candy during the BSC meeting. And why did we never hear about Claudia's trips to the dentist? She had to have had some serious cavity action going on. We're not really seeing the whole strictness factor here, c'mon now. How do we KNOW that the Kishis won't allow junk food?

^ My thoughts, too. That's why I think it's just possibly another dumb Claudia assumption (after all, they are her ADOPTED parents.... ;D)

And another thing, did they not see Claudia's trash? I'm sure at some point someone had to have noticed the empty chip bags and candy wrappers, unless Claudia was super sneaky with her trash, too.

^ I can see Claudia being the kind of person who lets her trash pile up, too. ;D

I would love to meet Mrs. Kishi and talk about library stuff with her. The Kishis seemed to me like they were bookish people who valued studying and good grades a lot, and just didn't understand Claudia's art passion. I think they appreciated her talent, though. I really don't think it's realistic that the Kishis would disapprove so much of the Nancy Drews. Come on...any librarian will tell you that Nancy Drew isn't the finest literary work out there, but given Claudia's school struggles, Mrs. Kishi should be glad that Claudia is reading something and enjoying it. There are books out there that are crappier than Nancy Drew for sure. I also remember Claudia saying that the public library didn't carry Nancy Drews...yeah, whatever. Every public library has them. They've been around forever. Unless Mrs. Kishi specifically told the children's librarian not to order any and to get rid of any they already had so that Claudia wouldn't be able to get her hands on them! LOL.

^The library by my house does not have them. If I want them, I have to order them on the computer or go downtown. I would prefer not to have to pick them up and have the librarians "judge" me. (Whether or not they actually do is besides the point.)
And I dunno, I wasn't supposed to read BSC books all the time when I was younger. My grandmother thought I should read something different once in a while, and my parents agreed. Also, they wanted me to challenge myself, which BSC books only did for a very brief time. Hence, the "intimate" table confusion. (I'm so embarrassed about this). I see the Kishi's being the same way.

I think I can speak for most librarians when I say that we don't judge what people check out. We along with the people who work the checkout desk are usually much too busy with other things to think about it. I can't believe your library branch doesn't have any Nancy Drew books...but at least you can get them from another. (I had the same confusion about the "intimate" table too!)

^ I would assume they were in their early 40s but might be wrong. I am just guessing, though. I don't think we were even given any clues.
