Agree about the Kishis being less strict. I think a lot of that was in Claudia's mind, along with a lot of her other thoughts about her parents "not understanding" her. I think they would have understood her more if she would have let them in. Maybe this came from her being closer with Mimi than with her own mother (the impression I always got) because Mimi was her primary caretaker as a kid.

In one book Claudia says that her parents have colorless, tasteless cereal for breakfast all the time, and I thought, c'mon Claud! One morning they had CINNAMON ROLLS! That's big.

I remember them always having special things like danish, pancakes, waffles etc. Some parents are just super against sugary cereals.

It also bothers me, on rereading, that there's all this angst about Claudia's parents being strict and conservative and not "understanding" her and how important her art work is, when they obviously shell out a fair amount of money for art classes (and I always doubted that Claudia payed for ALL her supplies--art supplies are expensive, especially for a dilettante (oops, I mean talented at everything artistic in the world) like Claudia.) They even set up a freaking darkroom for a hobby she had for maybe a month! That stuff's not cheap, either. I knew kids who had studied photography for years, won contests and worked on school publications and NONE of them had darkrooms in their homes. Actually, I think the Kishis are pretty lenient, in that they apparently let her live in a pigsty (my mom had definite opinions on my cleaning my room at age 13), wear her insane ensembles out of the house, and they never actually impose any consequences for her bad grades. Now that you mention it, it's true, she never gets in trouble for it, and they don't push her to be a supergenius like she seems to think, they just want her to do well enough to go to college someday. I'm 24 and my mother STILL nags me about cleaning my room. Ah well, it's the price you pay for still living with your parents, but it's worth it.

Also supporting the in-her-head theory, is the fact that unless Claudia does her own laundry, if her mother is putting stuff away, surely she'd find some of the junk food and books hidden in her daughter's room? I'm sure when Mrs. Kishi put away her clothes she'd wonder "What a strange girl, who puts books and food in her dresser drawer?"

I was doing my own laundry, folding it, and putting it away by the time I was 9!
I agree that Claudia thought her parents were stricter than they were and overreacted. What a silly girl!

I totally agree with aln, I think Claudia pretty much alienated herself from her family. They never seemed that hardcore to me or like they ignored her, she seemed to create those problems for herself. Its sort of like hte stupid adoption thing, she was always sooo dramatic. Though at 13 my mom was still pretty much cleaning my room for me, no way would I have gotten away with hiding candy and stuff, heh

And she has her own Ski equipment....I can imagine that being pretty expensive even if it is second hand.
I think when Claudia is older she would appreciate more...She was pretty spoilt...as it is she is just 13. What's the point in being a teenager if you can't b*tch about the rents.
I think Janine had it worse. Claudia always seemed the 'favourite' amongst extended family and other...She seems to have relationships with her family members whereas Janine is merely the over-achiever. I can't recall much interaction with Janine between her family.

In Claudia and the Genius of Elm Street, while they were planning Claud's "Junk Food Fantasy"(Chapter 7) Kristy had an idea to sell junk food as refreshments, then, later on,Chapter 14,Claudia said "I also liked the fact that we were going to have a refreshment table serving...junk food!(That was my idea,too.)". FYI Claudia,it was Kristy's idea, not yours!!!

I had to laugh last night because I started to write "how" and accidently wrote "who" and immediately thought of Claudia. ;D I think she's rubbing off on me. Ahhhh!

Don't most "refreshment tables" pretty much serve junk food anyway? Were they gonna hand out veggies or something instead?
