^ And don't forget their carnival of the month!
It just doesn't add up.

It seems like AMM didn't put too much thought into the whole money thing.

^ I never put too much thought into the money thing either ;D Bad enough to think about it in real life so I just accept the money issues as presented in the books with no questions. Agree, though, that it doesn't add up when you think about it. About Charlie driving Kristy and later Abby too for that much money.... he's a pretty nice brother for doing it for so little pay (now that wouldn't even cover a gallon of gas)

The whole money thing was one of the things that always bugged me about the books.

Kristy and Abby live 3 miles from Bradford Court, right? That's like, 1/8th of a gallon. So 50 cents seems okay if you're going by gas prices. And back then, gas was likely about 90 cents a gallon, so he really wasn't doing too bad!

^ You're probably right. I didn't calculate or anything but was just trying to make a joke about how terrible gas prices are now. They've at least gone down to less than $3 in MI right now. What bugged me about Claudia wasn't the money thing but how she ate all of the junk food - almost excessive and disgusting quantities. And they always made a big deal about how she was upset so sat down and ate a bag of candy or something. I don't think that presents a very healthy example...

That's why they had Dawn, who was the vegetarian and offered healthier food options for the readers.
I was reading Kristy's Book (again ;D) and noticed that after Patrick left and there was no food in the house, Kristy mentioned going to Claudia's house since Claudia always had junk food. Claudia always had a love for junk food, but I don't know how she managed to sneak it into the house--let alone pay for it when she was five or six years old.

^ I don't mind the junk food. What bothered me was that they almost made it sound like binge eating. It's one thing to have a few candy bars but Claud frequently said things like "I was upset so I sat down and comforted myself with a bag of Hershey's minatures." Just don't think that's a great thing to promote - using food for comfort.

I agree that Claudia has a problem and doesn't set a very good example. However, I'd hate to see how the ghostwriters would handle the topic of binge eating.

^ Ohhhh, me too. I'm really, really glad they didn't go there. Just would have rather the whole thing wasn't even insinuated.

I never thought about the topic of binge eating before either, but you're right--Claudia did have the tendency to do that. Yeah, I'm also glad they didn't touch on that topic. And bulimia--Stacey hates barf, so what kind of support would she give Claudia?

Yeah, but they all acted like Dawn was a freak for eating healthily. Also, I bet Claud was allowed to eat junk food when she was a kid but I bet her parents felt she was too into it and eating junk food in lieu of anything else and stopped buying it.

^^Dawn was a freak because what kind of normal person would prefer tofu over mystery meat for lunch? Personally, I like tofu, but I don't necessarily consider it health food.

I LOVE tofu! haha. I actually just put some in my fridge to defrost for tomorrow Anyway I totally agree with aln (and actually I didn't think about the mileage until you posted the thought about Charlie driving :-D ) Claudia seriously was disgusting about the candy. Most kids love candy and stuff but seriously she was gross about it. I've always thought it was so weird how she'd sit down and poof, next thing you know, she's gone through a bag of Lay's! I don't think the GWs thought much about the example they were setting. They just wanted to emphasize Claudia's luuuv for junkfood, imo... and make it completely unrealistic in the process :-P

I love tofu too, just not the smelly kind that my friend eats all of the time. I never thought about binge eating either. I think that Claudia wouldn't want to eat a lot of her junk food all at once, so she only eats a little at a time because she seems to want to keep the supply of it up. I think she likes the idea of having it "there" within reach at all-times too much, like she likes to be around it. This thought came from her creating that art exhibition of junk food thingee, that one day.
