It was horrible.
Dibbly lame crap, like free soap! Look, the backs of strangers drinking soda! Those girls need some serious photography tips. Weren't the photos what ended up being their 'thank you' present for the parents in SS1? Sad.

Haha, like Claudia's horse! And those fake photos, they don't even look real and the scenes from other books look better.

^I remember the Little Sister illustrations always looking half-done -- like, part of the drawing would be in great detail, but the rest was, like, quickly sketched lines. I know, the faces were so detailed, but the ends were always dashed off, like the bottom of someone's shirt or a table or whatever. I really liked the LS illustrations though, for the fact that Karen, Hannie, Nancy, and Andrew looked just as I pictured them. I liked the drawings of Kristy, and Seth was not at all like I pictured him (he has like a full beard on the cover of Karen's Birthday) and I never imagined Karen's mom with glasses. Ms. Colman is supposed to be black, I think, but she's so light in her illustrations that I never knew this.

I always thought that Ms. Colman wasn't originally intended to be black, and that's something that was just added in later. But I just looked at the cover of Karen's School Picture on Amazon, since it's an early book, and Ms. Colman looks darker than the white kids and lighter than the black kids in the class, so really, it's anyone's guess. She could be white, black, or Asian on that cover.
If anyone reads Saddle Club, I'm pretty sure that Carole wasn't originally intended to be black and that was added in later on.

Carole was definitely white with curly black hair on the original cover of (I think) Saddle Club #2. It was the one where Cobalt dies, and among the first books in the series.

Aw, I liked the pictures in SS#1! Especially Karen's manicure... I thought it was cute. Back to Claud, I agree with lovelylemontree (I think) who said that having Claudia so good at everything is unrealistic, though to be honest I didn't fully realise this until a few weeks ago Someone on my LJ friends list is a really good drawer, and draws things that people pay for, and posted abot how she sucked at painting. And I thought "Hang on... If you're good at art, wouldn't you be good at everything arty like Claudia is?!". Oops.

I think it's Claudia's birthday today. Woo-hoo! She'd be...33.

I know so many people born on July 11, lol. Yeah, it is a bit strange she's so great at so many things. Normally people just stick with one or two artistic forms...

This was being discussed a while back, but the whole junk food/snacks thing bothered me too. First of all, when did she buy all these things and how did she sneak them into her house? Obviously when her parents weren't home, but still. Also, she sometimes had special health food snacks for Dawn and diabetic snacks for Stacey and, I'm not sure, but I bet those probably weren't cheap.
The idea that the girls paid for part of the phone bill confused me too. I don't know how much it would have been, but it doesn't seem like whatever was in the treasury would be enough to pay for part of a phone bill.
I also never understood why her parents hated her reading Nancy Drews so much. I know they wanted her to be reading classic literature, but come on, she was such a poor student it's a miracle she liked reading at all. At least she was interested in reading SOMETHING.

I'm derailing this thread a bit just to say that I recently read Claudia's Big Party (or whatever it's called) and a couple of other Claudia books, and it depresses me how badly she treats Janine. I never realized as a kid how much Janine tried to connect with her and help her with her schoolwork, and Claudia just kept shutting her out over and over. "Mean Janine"...pfft. Right.

She mostly just gave Stacey/Dawn things like crackers and stuff though, didn't she? So I don't think those would be too expensive. One thing I don't get is how little the girls pay in dues but how they ALWAYS have money in the treasury, yet they pay for so many things with that money! Kid Kit supplies seems like it'd take up a huge chunk of the treasury, plus paying Charlie and Claudia? I have never understood how that treasury stays in the black.

^ I don't think the treasury makes sense either. They pay what, a dollar each every week? There's usually about 7 girls in the club at each time in the later books, so that's $7 a week, and with 4 weeks in a month that's $28 a month. That's not very much considering all the stuff they do. How much do they pay Charlie? I think it's really cheap, like 50 cents or something.

I think Charlie is paid 50 cents roundtrip. Or is it one way? I'm drawing a blank now. I think their initial offer was $1 and he said he'd do it for less. Regardless, if it's 50 cents round trip, that's 1.50 a week or $6 out of their $28 each month. I wonder how much they contribute to Claudia's phonebill? Maybe $10 a month or something? I guess that'd still leave them with $12, but then they have notebook supplies, kid kit krap, and pizza parties to fund... oy.
