I've seen a lot of instances of MA being good in a crisis, which is why MA to the Rescue's whole plot of her being freaked out in emergencies never made sense to me and seemed like a big change. Anyone else notice this or am I remembering that plot wrong? I think MA's take charge ability in different situations shows that she's not as "shy", "meek" and "sensitive" as they make her out and those traits are exaggerations - like Kristy's bossiness.

^ I remember that too about Mary Anne, about how she is supposed to be really calm in an emergency.

^ I've never read that book, but yes, Mary Anne always seems to be portrayed as being very calm in an emergency. When Jenny was sick in #4, Mary Anne must have been nervous - I would be, too! Yet she remained calm and managed to appear unfazed in front of Jenny. She just did what she had to do and waited for the ambulance - which I'm sure was good for Jenny! I know when I'm sick or injured, the last thing I want is people freaking out around me - it'll make me even more nervous and scared, especially when I was a little kid!

^ I had forgotten about those but they are definitely good examples. ;D I was thinking about when Mimi died and when Lou McNally ran off. There have also been several other instances.

Mary Anne was always my favorite and still is. I know she's really shy and timid and sensitive and tends to let people walk all over...but I'm exactly the same way lol. I can totally relate to all that, and when I get mad and let it out, it's usually in a short burst of rage which I later feel really upset about it. When I was younger, I always wanted to be able to take charge of things and stand up for myself like she did in Mary Anne Saves the Day. I never got the courage though lol. The other girls were really nasty to her alot, especially when she got her makeover. First they're all rolling her eyes at her idea to get a haircut, then treat her like garbage when she goes ahead with it? Some friends!
And really...when she lets Rageful Mary Anne out, I think it's hilarious. Remember the teacup smashing in Farewell Dawn?

I have kind of a love hate relationship with Ma. there are books where i really love her, but then she has some that make her look like a b*tch, or some that don't do much for me (like MA and the search for tigger, which is one of the most pointless books in the entire series). anyway, the MA grows a pair books are favourites because they contradict Ma's saint reputation, and I love that ;D
And I don't think Ma was really as shy as everyone made her out to be... she had that reputation, but she wasn't really like that. at least that's what i think.

^ I agree about MA's reputation or at least the stereotype of her "sensitivity".

I hated her. Her sensitivity just irritated me.
EDIT: I mean I understand about her mum dying and all that but most of the time she cries over stupid things. She also seemed very bitchy.
