Twinkies are evil because they make you kill people. That's what one defense attorney said.

In the seventies, some guy killed the mayor of San Francisco and a supervisor. He got a lighter sentence than expected because his lawyer claimed his excessive consumption of junk food, particularly twinkies, made him violent. It became known as The Twinkie Defense.

Me too. When I was a kid I used to eat them twice a day, once at lunch, and then one when I came home from school. It's also a wonder I'm not obese.

In the seventies, some guy killed the mayor of San Francisco and a supervisor. He got a lighter sentence than expected because his lawyer claimed his excessive consumption of junk food, particularly twinkies, made him violent. It became known as The Twinkie Defense. Actually, that's not true. The defence was that he was mentally ill and unable to tell right from wrong at the time that he killed those people. The fact that he was normally very health-conscious but at that time was instead subsisting mainly on Twinkies and other junk food because he didn't care about his health anymore was presented as evidence of a symptom of his depression, not as something that caused his mental illness. The news media just didn't report it correctly. I'm not saying that the guy really was legally insane and should have gotten a lighter sentence, just that nobody during the trial tried to blame the murders on Twinkies.

Does anyone remember how they always used to mention Stacey eating Frookies (I think), cookies that were sweetened with fruit juice instead of sugar? Do these actually exist? I remember them, and yes, they do exist! At least, a similar product does. I've had them and I would rather have real cookies any day!

^ oh yeah, I do remember that! Haven't seen them anywhere though. I can't imagine they taste as nice as regular cookies.

Never heard of fruit juice cookies, but there's supposed to be some sort of soda now that is made with real fruit juice. Which I don't really understand. If it's carbonated juice then that doesn't sound so yummy to me. Personally I hate when people try to make junk food healthier. It's JUNK food. If you have to go through the trouble of eating some low-fat no-carb sugar free cookie instead of a regular one then it's probably not worth the effort.

I agree. And sugar substitutes like splenda are just plain gross.

sweet n' low ain't bad. I actually prefer it. I like it with my tea or coffee because it blends in better than regular sugar. Maybe it's because I don't mix it well enough when I use regular sugar. I could feel the texture of the individual granules too much.

I actually kinda like Splenda over regular sugar. Like McPon mentioned about sweet n' low, Splenda also disolves quickly, which means I don't have a lump of sugar at the bottom of my coffee.
That, and if I bake with it, it means I can just eat more of the junky food instead of limiting myself, lol. My metabolism SO isn't Claudias.

^ mine was almost as good until I had my daughter... ah well.
Not a fan of artificial sweetners. Pepsi Max is probably the best diet drink.

Just read Claudia and Crazy Peaches and wondered if anyone else noticed that there is a lot of peanut butter used. It seems like every snack Claudia eats (except the frequent candy at the meetings) has some kind of peanut butter. I don't remember this from other books, though peanut butter is mentioned I know. I also noticed, though, what I thought were unique names for the ghost writers. Maybe they are peanut butter lovers???
