I got a kick out of Sharon, though...her absent-mindedness made me laugh, but she was a good stepmum for Mary Anne, who needed a mother in her life.

Well I’m the topic of BSC and money, was it ever mentioned what some of the clients did for a living?

I wonder how many were mentioned to have jobs outside the typical doctor or lawyer, but I think that’s a different thread.

None of the parents had modest paying jobs except for maybe Mallory's mom (Temp secretary) and Stacey's mom (mall buyer).
The books don't seem to shy away from Mr McGill's wealth the way they do the other parents...it's alluded to that he's pretty wealthy and flash with it. High powered corporate lawyers and investment bankers aren't bringing home pennies- far from it. These are typically very high paying jobs. Dawn was an OC rich kid also.

^ Stacey should have been flashy with the money lol. Mr. McGill could have bought her anything. No one did rich right in these books lol

Stacey should have been flashy with the money, lol. Mr. McGill could have bought her anything. No one did rich right in these books, lol. No, I'm glad they didn't pander to stereotypes. Not all kids from wealthy families are flashy. That would have ruined the entire BSC series to have all the kids from wealthy families be all flashy and snobby. There's enough of that in the Sweet Valley series. I'm glad Ed McGill did not spoil his daughter by buying her anything she wanted. Stacey is definitely NOT Sweet Valley's Lila Fowler, who has a multi-millionaire daddy who buys her anything she wants...and Lila is a spoiled, conceited, entitled brat who flaunts her dad's millions. Part of what made the BSC series so fascinating is that here Watson was wealthy and yes, they had a big house and lots of material things, but they remained down to Earth and UNspoiled. I say they did lots of RIGHT things regarding money. The parents, even the high income parents did the right thing keeping their kids' feet on the ground and by not buying them everything they wanted and by not raising them to be entitled brats.

I never even knew that Sharon's parent were wealthy. I thought they just didn't like Richard for some random reason.

I never even knew that Sharon's parents were wealthy. I thought they just didn't like Richard for some random reason. I suspect Sharon's parents were more well-to-do rather than millionaire rich. And they probably found Richard and his family "odd," even though they are a bit odd themselves. I suspect Sharon and Richard both had the reputation for being "weird" at Stoneybrook High. It was good to see them find each other again with their daughters' help and to see Sharon's parents finally accept Richard.

The only time we really saw a family face financial hardship was in Poor Mallory, when Mr. Pike got laid off, right?
Speaking of the Pikes, that beach house they rented in Sea City was MASSIVE. When they first go in Boy-Crazy Stacey and they're moving in, Mallory tells Mary Anne and Stacey that if they don't like their room, they can trade with someone or choose a new one. So that's at least five bedrooms and it's right on the beach. And it looks huge in the illustration on the original book cover. How were they able to afford that?

^ I remember reading somewhere here on the boards that it's possible that the Pikes could afford the house because they return to it each year. As a result, their rates are lower than someone who rented it for a time one summer.

I get the feeling that their sea city house and vacation is the only one they go on. If they save up money every year and bring their own stuff it would be affordable. There was one book where they couldn’t go and ended staying home if I remember right.

They drove there, cooked most of their meals, hung out at the beach. It sounds like the house rental was the only real cost to the vacation. It had to have been cheaper than renting 2 hotel rooms plus meals out plus whatever activities they would do on a different vacation.

My MIL goes on vacation every summer and she just puts it on credit cards. It's ridiculous, but the Pikes could also just be irresponsible.
