Karen's Prize. She won a $100 savings bond for winning the city and the county bees. ($200 total) The prize for the state bee was $250, but she lost and only got a certificate from the governor.
According to my inflation calculator that is $220.21 and $553.00 in today's money. I was highly motivated by money at that age. Perhaps if I had gotten paid to try then I wouldn't have gotten out on my first word in my school spelling bee competition.

Karen's Ducklings. The toy car that they ordered off of the TV was $20 plus $3.95 shipping. That is $41.21 + $8.14 shipping today. Fifty bucks for something Andrew crashed into a fence and broke within 30 seconds of owning.

Karen's Pizza Party. Karen won $1000 ($2060.65 today) in what was essentially a pick-your-name-from-a-hat contest. No skill or essay writing or anything. (This was an odd contest because the winner had to do a commercial and modeling as part of the win. What if they got a really ugly or uncharismatic winner?)
Anyway, Karen should file some taxes with all these money prizes that she kept winning.

I wonder how much Claudia has spent on food. I mean unless she’s raising the nearby dollar tree all that name brand stuff has to be adding up right?

At least she lived in the 80s. A bag of chips is like $5 right now. 😢

She was very generous with treats and her room! Well deserved VP status.

She did admit in the Chain Letter book that she once stole a dollar out of Mimi's purse to buy Twinkies and felt guilty about it

Aw, man. That reminds me of when a whole box of Swiss Cake Rolls was 99 cents.

Karen's Snow Day. It did not say how much Charlie and Sam made per house that they did the snow removal for. It did say that they paid the 3 Musketeers 50 cents commission for each customer that they recruited. That's 50 cents split 3 ways.

Karen's Treasure. Karen, Andrew, and Kristy found this kid's "treasure box" buried in the back yard of the Little House. Karen was super pissed that it had $2.47 in it.
(My book has a typo and says "think" instead of "thing.")
Well, Karen. $2.47 in 1935 = $28.94 in 1997 (when this was published) = $53.42 in 2022. Henry was around 10 years old. Considering she often had to scrounge through couch cushions and other people's coat pockets to squeeze out a dollar, I'd say that was a lot of money for a kid back then.
Seth did take her to a coin collector who told her that the collection was worth "several hundred dollars." There was a penny from like 1861 and other old coins. (She didn't sell it. She tracked down the guy and gave everything back to him.)

Some people do say "another think coming". It sounds wrong to the ear but I don't think it's a typo.

^Huh. Well, I don't like the sound of that at all.
Karen's Carnival. The Three Musketeers used their own money to buy carnival supplies. ($4.50, Hannie. $4.25, Nancy. $5, Karen.) That wasn't enough, so their parents donated $10 each. (That they didn't have to pay back. Thanks, Watson.) Lisa also gave $10. So, they spent $54. "Fifty-four dollars sounded like a fortune." (The kid in my last post buried an equivalent of that much in his era! She thought he was cheap!)
Unfortunately, these kids were always stupid about money. They charged 25 cents to play games and then gave out prizes that cost 50 cents to a dollar each. They earned $32.40 at the carnival. So really they lost $21.60.

There's always tiny mentions of money in Little Sister books. Karen always has approximately $4 to her name.
Karen's Dinosaur. Karen snuck away to buy David Michael something from the museum gift shop. She had $4.18. Large dinosaur models were $26. She bought three little rubber dinos for $1.25 each. That all sounds accurate. Gift shop stuff is obnoxiously high, but there's always super cheapy stuff to shut whiny kids up in the moment.

Karen's Home Run. The town had a Memorial Day parade with a thing called Bicycle Brigade. Kids could decorate their bikes and ride them at the very end of the parade. The best three designs won $100, $50, and an ice cream sundae.

Jessi and the Bad Baby-sitter. Mary Anne and Jessi take $30 (taken out of the treasury) to the party store. That's a month's worth of dues! Maybe the amount was updated in the Kindle version, but dues are still $1 a week per member.
I think it's better for my sanity not to wonder how the heck they afford all their events, pizza parties and stuff XD.
