Jessi and the Bad Baby-sitter. Mary Anne and Jessi take $30 (taken out of the treasury) to the party store. That's a month's worth of dues! Maybe the amount was updated in the Kindle version, but dues are still $1 a week per member. I think it's better for my sanity not to wonder how the heck they afford all their events, pizza parties and stuff XD. Then you factor in Claudia's phone bill and Charlie's gas money, how were they able to afford everything? I always figured Ann was just relying on the prices of everything when she was growing up in the 60s. Goes along with how everyone is obsessed with I Love Lucy and Leave It to Beaver! They bought a lot at the party store too! I know the kids used some of their own money for things, like Buddy and Suzi were given money and they figured they'd use their costumes from the Zorbs video as Halloween costumes, but that was still a lot!

The treasury is barely enough to cover Charlie's gas money. Idk how much they're putting in for the phone bill, but after those 2, there'd be nothing left. As a kid, I never thought about it at all. I think you're right; nothing else makes sense! But even with 60s prices, it all doesn't add up. Party stores are crazy expensive too! I'm imagining it to be like Party City, and $30 won't get you very far once you touch the costume items.

Maybe they just contributed to Claudia's phone bill? But even then, that's only a couple of dollars.
Buddy and Suzi bought the costumes with their own money, Mary Anne and Jessi used BSC money for smaller stuff. But you're right, if they're buying that much, $30 can go fast at a party store!

$30 wouldn't scratch the surface for costumes. At Amazon that would only cover three Groucho Marx glasses not including shipping.

Sorry for double-posting but the recent post about New York, New York reminded me of this discussion thread.
I've already said that Stacey's dad is in competition with Watson for wealthiest parent because Stacey mentioned them having a four-bedroom apartment in Manhattan so he must be loaded. And I think she said they lived on the Upper East Side? That's one of the richest neighborhoods in Manhattan. Also, if the Cummingses live in the Dakota? They're up there with Watson too! That's where John Lennon lived and it's super fancy. And didn't Laine and Stacey go to a private school growing up?
Like the girls are in awe that Watson is a real, live millionaire but Stacey's dad has to be up there too. Even after the divorce, he can afford a two-bedroom apartment in Manhattan on his own.

Maybe Stacey didn't see herself as rich since everyone around her was as well off or better. The other girls probably had no idea because Ed wasn't generous to them like Watson was.

Jack has to be up there with the wealthy parents. He lives in a beautiful house near LA with a housekeeper and skylights in every room. I agree that Watson seems wealthier than the rest because he stands out in Stoneybrook.

I think the only one she has to cover is when she snuck to Stoneybrook in #72 (also, I guess in California Girls). But otherwise, he can afford to fly her across the country anytime she wants, even during the holidays. Did he help buy the farmhouse too (I think it was mostly her parents who are rich iirc, but he definitely had to send child support)? Sharon didn't even have to get a job right away. Ed is similar. He could afford that apartment AND buying a whole house in Stoneybrook after the divorce (Maureen didn't get a permanent job until 30 books (!) after the divorce too). He also eats takeout for like every meal and said she could go anywhere she wanted, even Europe, in Stacey's Lie (seriously, Stacey is crazy for not choosing that option). Crazy.

What does Jack do again? I want to say engineer but I'm probably wrong. Or something with business? I always thought it was odd he had to hire a housekeeper when Jeff moved back considering it was just going to be him and Jeff. Ed is definitely up there with Watson. Anyone who can afford a 4-bedroom apartment on the Upper East Side is extremely loaded. And you're right, he covered a lot of stuff for Maureen, who wasn't working when they got divorced.

I'm not sure what Jack does. He has a pretty sweet job, though, whatever it is, because in BSC in the USA he states that he doesn't have to work evenings or weekends. I'm guessing there's a possibility that he comes from old money. Nothing else really makes sense. I got the impression that Sharon didn't work while she lived in California too (maybe I'll be proved wrong... I'm about to read Dawn's portrait).
It is weird that he hired a housekeeper. Feels sort of lazy to me. Apparently he's neat, and now that I think about it, who did the housework when Sharon lived there? Weird. Maybe the house was a mess for years and he got tired of it but didn't know how to keep it up. Either way, I'm jealous that he can afford one (I hate housework).

I think Jack hired Mrs. Bruen because he was a single dad and wanted to spend quality time with Jeff. He's able to do all the cooking and cleaning himself, but the cost of a full-time housekeeper was worth not being distracted from his kids. Dawn said he was always really attentive when they came to visit.

I still think it's weird when it's just Jeff, but I get it more when Dawn and Carol moved in. Idk. I still like Jack because he overall seems like a good parent to me, like the polar opposite of Patrick.

Karen's School Bus. The class did this thing called a cake walk as part of the school Fall Festival Fundraiser. Basically the kids made cakes, and then people paid $1 for a chance to win them. (And there was a strange game of musical chairs that went along with it.) I was skeptical that this was better than a regular bake sale. They sold cakes for $6, $5, and $15. I assume that more than 3 kids donated cakes to sell, so that actually seems like not a bad way to make money quicker.
