^ Oh, I haven't read a lot of the later ones. I just remember him telling Sharon's dad that he opened his own firm. I guess I just assumed that it was family/criminal because that's what most privately owned firms are. (You know what they say about assumptions!). Good for Richard - Family law/criminal law is boooring!

^ It is? I would think that would be one of the most interesting kinds but have no idea from personal experience. I agree with what you said about Richard and money.

I'd also bet that almost all of Alma's insurance money, and any other assets she had, went directly into MA's college fund, or a trust of some kind that's been quietly earning interest all these years. (My dad's a corporate lawyer; they love trusts!).
I just moved most of my BSC boxes around to make space for Thanksgiving visitors and am too lazy to move them back yet, but I remeber thinking that the cases he discusses in MA Saves the Day and MA and the Little Princess both sound like some kind of corporate or financial law, but I also may naturally sort of associate Richard with my dad and assume they do similar things.

^ Alma may not have had much insurance money, either. I can see how the Spiers would be upper middle class or middle class but not "real live millionaires" who live in the Brewers' neighborhood. Never even considered that they might.

I can also see richard putting a lot of what he does earn into various different safe investments. they might not have liquid income now, but ma's future would be very well provided for.

It's already been said, but I'm sure CT is expensive in general -- closer to NYC, so houses would be priced higher, than say, a house out in the sticks in the south. Even modest houses would be expensive. If Watson doesn't have to worry about paying off a mortgage, then I guess he would have money to throw around on chinese takeout!
I also agree with the theory about Richard being tight with money and not wanting to live in a huge house, if a smaller one was more practical. He's not the lavish lifestyle kind of guy. It was never mentioned what kind of car he drove (I don't remember at least), but I'm willing to bet he's had the same car since MA was little, and bought something reliable, like a volvo.
I'm surprised no one's parents worked as a bank teller, repairman, florist, etc. I know Mrs. McGill worked as a Buyer for Bellair's, but that was in the offices, not as if she was on the sales floor. I'm sure the lady who works the perfume counter needs a sitter, too. Where did Mrs. Barrett work, anyway?

You know, they do seem to always sit in their own neighborhood - so it makes sense that everyone's parents have the same sort of job and they are all in the same social class.
Didn't Norman Hill's parents do something less office related?

I think it's pretty unrealistic that when the mothers went back to work after years and years out of the workforce (Maureen and Elizabeth, for example) they were able to get straight back into high paying, "impressive" office jobs.
Particularly Elizabeth - she had Charlie at 20, was a SAHM for 10 yrs until Patrick left, but was able to find a job to comfortably (or reasonably comfortably) support five people without even recieving child support? When did she get the necessary qualifications or past experience?

^ I wondered about Elizabeth, too. Did she go to college? I doubt it if she had Charlie at 20 and then Sam two years later and it didn't mention her going to school while they were young.

I don't think Elizabeth went to college -- when did she have the time? Unless she went to CC or something before she had Charlie.
But yeah, I hate that the moms were able to find work so FAST. Even after I graduated from college, it was a good 5 months until I started my current job. Not as easy as the BSC makes it out to be.

^ That's what I was thinking about Elizabeth. As for how easy it is to get a job, it is the world of the BSC where everything is better than reality. ;D

^ ;D Didn't the Hills work at home? I think I remember that being mentioned. I wonder where Mr. Johannsen worked as I know he worked from home some of the time. Wasn't he an engineer? What kind? Did it ever mention?
