I think you and I will always agree to disagree where Karen is concerned, sotypical. (I think I'm a little rude like Karen myself and us biters must stick together in all situations ) I already miss our interesting discussions and look forward to getting back to them and these boards I'm also looking forward to rereading this book, too, for all of my favorite parts. I'm thinking this is also the one where the sitters take the kids for a walk by the pond and take the boys to get a haircut - not a job I would want Give me the babies any day (until they start crying or need to be changed)

I can deal with the biting more so than screaming "Witch!" right in front of that poor woman. I agree, sotypical, it's beyond rude and her parents should have nipped that in the bud!

Yeah, the staring and lack of tact are what you'd expect from a six-year-old, but screaming about witches and black magic when the poor woman is right there deserves a stern talking-to.

Oh God I feel so sorry for Morbidda/Mrs Porter... she seemed really lonely and I don't know why but Karen yelling out stupid things about her being a witch really irritates me. It reminds me of this play I did recently of women being accused of witchcraft. I know it's completely different as this is a child's imagination but Karen is so bloody insistant and completely graphic and loud about it that it annoys me.

^Yes! Even as a little kid I felt bad for Mrs. Porter! She really did just seem very lonely, I'm sure having Karen scream "GAH! WITCH!" everytime she -gasp- dared to step outside of her house didn't help the situation.

I just started re-reading this since we've been discussing it and at the beginning of the book, when Kristy's mom realizes she has to move the wedding up and gets Kristy to help her with lists and stuff, Kristy doesn't arrive to the BSC meeting until 5:36

*shoots Kristy the look*
I feel bad for Mrs. Porter too sometimes. She does seem to be lonely and have a good heart.

Especially in the book (I think it was Goodbye Stacey Goodbye) when she asks the kids to come in for lemonade and says "Please I hardly ever have guests." I feel really sorry for her then. Then eventually when they go in and have the lemonade, Karen's all "I'm not staying in that house with her." Little cow...

I felt SO bad for Mrs Porter too. Aww, poor woman. She seems lonely and Karen is so mean to her all the time. Isn't Mrs Porter in some sort of club, though? Something Karen's grandma is in, too? I think it was in the first Little Sister book. So maybe Mrs. Porter isn't completely lonely

I will have to double check the book but I think it was the gardening club.

I think Mrs. Porter is fully aware that the kids think she's a witch and uses that to her advantage.

^I like that theory cause otherwise I just feel terrible for her! Another thing about this book - Charlie asking Elizabeth if he can have some wine cause in a year he'll be in college and all the... oh, it's cuts off there heh. I like Charlie wanting to drink, pretty funny. The girl on the cover does NOT look like Karen! At all!

Oh, she totally uses it to her advantage. I think it's in Kristy's Great Idea where Karen sees her in her window and she touches her nose and Karen thinks she's put a spell on Boo Boo. It's always written that she "cackles" when she laughs. And doesn't she keep brooms on her porch in plain view?
I did feel bad for her with the lemonade, she tells them it's freshly homemade to make it sound more appealing, and then Kristy sees the store-bought mix on the kitchen counter.

^That really made me like Mrs. Porter. I really think she IS lonely, even if she DOES like to have a little fun with the kids and the whole witch thing.
