Sometime in the series, Mary Anne can get her ears pierced, it's just that she doesn't want to. I think it was because of something that happened to her at Camp Mohawk.

Yeah I just reread the camp mohawk one and she says that even when her father tells her it's okay for her to get pierced ears, she won't. She has nightmares about the needle coming at her from when the other CIT's decided to pierce her ears.

I agree with everyone about it being unfair with Mrs. Arnold expecting Claudia to be able to tell the difference betwen Carolyn and Marilyn. I did feel bad for the twins, though, since they were treated as one person instead of two different people. I thought of the chapter in Abby's book in which she writes how she and Anna were treated as one person by other kids. Mallory's shopping trip to the mall with Carolyn and Marilyn sounded fun as well as the gifts they recieved for their birthday. The trip to the mall that Mallory had with all the club members was also fun to read about.

So when re-reading this, something that was obvious to me was the inconsistency with Mary Anne's wardrobe from this part of the series to the later part of the series. In this book (and in many others) she actually wears relatively cool outfits. In this one she wears a skirt, body suit and suspenders. Mal comments that Claud, Dawn AND Mary Anne could pass for being in high school. But later in the series Mary Anne is stereotyped into wearing mumsy outfits OR cut-off shorts and t-shirts, as she wears on so many covers, a la Kristy style.
I like how Mal sarcastically "makes fun of" Claudia with the "twines" comment.
Also, Mallory's haircut. They never keep with the short hairstyle, except for later in the series (what first comes to mind is the cover of MA in the Middle where she has shorter hair).
Wow these girls are loaded. MA and Kristy can afford to pay for earrings for all of the other girls, including 2 pairs for Dawn!? For just a "you got your ears pierced" present? Talk about caring 13-year-olds. Usually kids are more selfish with their money because, well, they don't have much of it!

I doubt they bought real high-quality earrings. I'm surprised Mallory didn't have an allergic reaction, have to take hers out, and accidentally have her holes grow shut. Because she's Mallory.

Getting her ears closed up would have been too mean, even for Mallory So Ann went with the hair growing back quickly LOL Maybe those girls are good with their money and had leftovers from Kristy's Big Day

I still can't get over how much money Marilyn and Carolyn must have had. I’m guessing they each had $40 or $50 unless prices in Stoneybrook (which they sure seemed to for school trips) fell into the time warp of years past!
I also realized we never were told what shoes the other 7 Pike kids got, only that Mal got loafers instead of pink/green shoes. We know Claud had many pairs of shoes. The way the loafer comment read, it sounded like Mrs. Pike intended for Mal to wear them closer to on a daily basis than simply for special occasions or school pictures or something like that. I am totally a Kristy clothes-wise. I admit it. Would an 11 year old really wear loafers almost daily? (I’m guessing Mal had at least one pair of sneakers). Maybe like the haircutting this was another instance of “Poor Mallory.” I fail to “get” how a haircut and different hairstyle costs LESS than the Avia or Reebok shoes Nicky wanted (from a specialty shoe store at the mall—those places generally cost more money even in 1989). If Mal had wanted a perm, color, or other "extras" done to her hair that would be different. Seemed to me she just wanted it cut and styled differently. Wouldn't that be the same cost as a plain haircut/shampoo? We know the triplets' got their "cactus" haircuts in "Hello, Mallory." (Hey this second Mal book also is about “hair.”)
Finally, not one person Pike parent or otherwise so much as gave Mal a thumbs up on her “new” look. I did think it was very sweet of Kristy and Mary Anne to buy everyone earrings and thoughtful of Claud to make sure Kristy and Mary Anne weren’t left out by making them clip- ons.

I always thought it was odd that Mal was specifially told to get loafers, when Kristy was told she wasn't old enough in another book (SS#11, I think...I know she wasn't 13 at the time).

^Thank you! I was almost positive somewhere in BSC lore another sitter said something about wanting loafers but being told they were too young. Then I remembered reading that in a children's book I once read called "Do Bananas Chew Gum?" It was a great story about a 12 year old boy who was dealing with reading difficulty--hey Claudia could maybe relate. Anyway "Sam," the character said his parents said he was too young, too for loafers.
O/T to "shoes." I am quickly re-reading this and at the top of page 48 Mal tells us that Kristy and Mary Anne each sat once for the twins "a while ago." I am not remembering when that was or if we even (I don't think we did) got to read about it. Would have been interesting. Also, I was surprised Kristy didn't volunteer to try sitting herself to see what happened and that Marilyn and Carolyn simply didn't help themselves to an extra snack (when they tricked Mal the first day) and later with the ice cream sandwiches. I know if the latter had happened, the "Pig Latin," solution might not have. I found it strange that since the girls were ignoring Mal anyway that didn't also apply to snacks. Maybe the girls felt that would be taking things too far.

I looked in my copy of the Complete Guide - no mention of the girls appearing in any book prior to #21.
I could have sworn the Arnold name was mentioned in a very early book, so I did some more sleuthing, and found that Claudia accidentally called "the Arnolds' residence" in book #7 when she was trying to call Chez Maurice.

^I remember that! I just figured it was yet another case of repeated names. It would be funny if Claudia had called the(se) Arnolds! Good job, Detective, Kane!

I wore deck shoes to school most days when I was 12, because most kids at my school did. They look pretty much like loafers except that they have laces. That was a few years after this book was published, though. Did anyone else here wear those, or was everyone at my junior high weird? I wear sneakers most of the time now.

At my jr high everyone wore Airwalk skate shoes. Didn't matter if you were a skateboarder or not. They were the status brand of the time, which is weird because now they sell at Payless for like $25. Lol.
I was loaded at their age. Seriously, I never spent a dime of birthday money for the longest time. I had no concept of money management or bargain shopping though, so if I did go on a shopping trip like Marilyn and Carolyn's I wouldn't have had much to show for it.
