Man the description of mrs Arnold and the way she looks, this lady is a train wreck! Maybe that is why she wanted the perfect twins?

^ i never thought of her as a train wreck. she reminds me of my mom's friend in that it just seemed like she had too much free time, and threw herself into stereotypical "mom things" like tacky jewelry and holiday baking :]

I don't think she was a trainwreck, she just wanted the family to be a perfect one, but the girls were imperfect, which kept happening in all the books with them after, beginning with Mary Anne and the Great Romance when they weren't getting along and needed separate rooms.
I think hanging on to birthday money is a good idea, even at my age. I'm glad they got new clothes, but they could have bought something else with it and just gone clothes shopping with their parents too, as I'm sure they need more than one outfit they each bought with Mallory

I didn't think she was a train wreck either, she seemed like so many moms I knew when I was little. Now I feel like finding mentions of her and her crazy accessories in the books ;D

That always made me mad! It really wasn't her fault.

That way they could each pick an outfit as a "starting point" to show their mom what kind of clothes they preferred, without her being there trying to steer them toward things they didn't really like. Whenever I read any of the shopping and malling chapters in this book, I feel transported back in time and can clearly picture the 80s styles those clothing stores would have been filled with.

Me too! I used to love when my mom would drop me and my friends off and we would just cruise the mall.

They needed to learn how to accessorize and make their own style out of their current clothes. I hope their parents wouldn't go out and buy two new wardrobes. That's what growth spurts and back to school sales are for.

they could have still bought clothes, but more essential items...it was smart how carolyn bought the jeans so she could wear them with items she already has, so more of that....or putting it towards something else they could use for a long time like a really nice coat which would last several years I guess I'm not as fun or impulsive with spending anymore

I wonder if Marilyn and Carolyn decided to switch places in hopes that something that drastic might finally get their parents attention. I finished re-reading the book, this thread, and also the one about the twins in general. It sounds like Mr, (Good question as to where he was) and Mrs. Arnold pretty much "saw" their daughters as one person or maybe as cute little people to show off. It is so sad to me that Mrs. Arnold really did act surprised by Mallory and the twin's talks with her. She should have had some clue. I know, I know, this is Stoneybrook, land of oblivious and indifferent parents. It just was literally twice as bad here. I wished we had gotten to read about the sitting jobs Kristy and Mary Anne had with the twins "a long time ago." Maybe we would have gotten to know the girls a little better that way. ITA that I never felt particularly attached to either girl probably because I didn't know them. It was interesting to read some early discussion about Marilyn being friends with Charlotte and Becca. All we pretty much saw was Becca and Charlotte, except for the Danielle Books and at Krushers games. I would have also enjoyed reading about Marilyn and Carolyn meeting the Pike triplets. I know the boys were two years older and boys but they maybe could have "helped" the twins in some way or at least "help" Mallory be a better friend/sitter to the girls. I do still love the moon and stars sweatshirt, too! O/T, Sparklymouse, I hope by now you found your hypercolor T.

^Oh, no, I'm sorry to hear that. Maybe one day you will find a replacement (if you want to).
I forgot to mention earlier how strange it was (to me) that Mrs. Arnold's volunteer job at SES lasted 2 months yet we never hear of any other charge's not even sitter's families being involved let alone the reason for it. It reminded me of some other parent needing a long term sitter and Kristy tells us DM goes to SES, too, yet we are never told of the fund-raising project. It is awesome that some Stoneybrook parents are able (and want) to be so involved in SES. In this book, I wish that same parent had used some of those free afternoons with her girls instead!
