I'm assuming it was a glitch in the author's planning/thinking. In most cases, school starts back the week after New Year's. (So this year, it would most likely start on the 6th.)

^My school started on the 2nd regardless of what day of the week it was. This year it is on a Thursday and they're going Thursday and Friday. That's why it I figured SMS just started their week on that Tuesday.

That sucks! But then again, the timing of the school year is difference between our areas. Doesn't the U.S. start late August and end in May (or something?) We go until the very end of June.

It depends on the part of the country. The farther south you go, the earlier the year starts and ends. My siblings in FL go back in mid-August.

When I was in school we always started around Aug. 23rd and were done by the first few days of June (unless we had a lot of snow days to make up that year). High school graduation is a few days before everyone else gets out. (I think mine was May 28th? It's been so long ago.) I think WI has a state law now that public schools can't start before Sept. 1st. I checked my district website and last year they started Sept. 3rd and ended June 10th.

When I went to school, it was always the first Thursday after Labor Day and it ended at the end of June.

It can even depend on school district. I know at the elementary school across the street from me the poor kids start back in mid August (in the heat) and have to go until nearly the end of June. I think when I was a kid we started in September but also had to go through June. I know that in some of the SF Valley school districts, the kids get out at the end of May. I probably have said this before but think Stacey had the right idea when she told us (she was surprised about CT school calendar) that school's should start after Labor Day and end just before Memorial Day. Gives kids, especially younger ones, more time (ideally and hopefully)to be kids and get out in the sunshine.

I always started in August and ended in May, and thought it was interesting as a kid that the BSC did September/June I thought that was definitely more "summer" break, June through August.

We start the same time but go until, like, June 28th or something (the last week).

When I was a kid, we started at the end of August and went until about the middle of June. However, they have changed it recently and now they go back after Labor day.

Okay, wait, now I'm confused. I'll check the actual book!
Chapter 1: the book opens with Sharon singing "Christmas carols in January". Mary Anne describes how she talked to Dawn on New Year's Eve but Dawn was already in CA by then. MA spent NYE with Kristy, so it had already passed. They had made resolutions, which Mary Anne had lost and not found until "two days later". So it has to be at least January 2nd now.
The first day back at school is not mentioned what day it is, but there is a BSC meeting that afternoon. Therefore, it has to be a Monday or Wednesday. No mention of dues, so probably Weds. The project is assigned in class.
The next chapter (chapter 4) begins on a Thursday, so we confirm that the BSC meeting was Weds. Mary Anne and her group discuss the project at length and then go to Mary Anne's house after school to discuss it. Amelia leaves early to go to dinner with her family.
The next day doesn't specify what day it is, but Amelia was killed the previous night and services will be "held on Monday". Presumably, this means the following Monday after the Friday that we're currently on.
Chapter 6 is a letter from Dawn, who describes that she got back to Palo City on Sat and babysat on Tues in CA, which checks out. MA is too depressed to get the mail "on Thursday" but she cheers up when she sees the letter from Dawn arrive. Since Amelia's memorial hasn't happened yet but she's already dead... WHAT DAY IS IT? It can't be the Thursday that Amelia died, because that was late at night. It can't be the following Thursday because the memorial hasn't happened. So this doesn't make sense.
Chapter 7 is a continuation of the day that MA read Dawn's letter, and they go to a BSC meeting. We can then imply that the ghostwriters were on crack and it should have been Friday when MA was too depressed to be excited about the mail, which makes the story work again.
Chapter 8 is the Monday of the memorial service.
Chapter 11 is when January 4th is mentioned as the date of Amelia's death.
So it seems that I was wrong, and they went back to school on Weds the 3rd. I actually can't believe that everything checks out so well (or that I just spent the past half hour figuring it out!), the only mistake is the Thursday-that-should-be-Friday.

And btw, here in the Bay Area, we used to start school the Tuesday after Labor Day and end on or around my birthday (June 11th). For some reason, all the schools start in mid-August now, which they definitely didn't used to 20 years ago. We used to go back to school on the first Monday after Jan 1st, so it could be anywhere from the 2nd to the 6th.

Wow, we were just talking about this book last night and then it happened to me -- in real life (or something similar). I also walked by an ambulance that was blaring its siren last night around the same time that my friend passed away (we're in different cities though).

^I read about that on the venting thread just now, virgoscorpio. I'm so sorry about your friend; I am sending you hugs and sympathy over the internet.

I think, they shouldn't have the meeting on Friday. Kristy wasn't herself, one of they're classmate died the day before. So, everyone was still in shock, sad, or angry. Just have Claudia answer the phone, write down the messages and she can call saying Mrs. Johnassen needs a sitter on Tuesday. Stacey your the only one is free. Then, Claudia or Stacey would call back Mrs. Johnassen, that Stacey will be there, on Tuesday. That's my opinion.
