Also, to add to some of the older topics in this thread: I must say it doesn't bother me that the 13-year-old baby-sitters were playing jokes on the 8-year-old. Most 13-year-olds aren't exactly that mature, so I wouldn't really expect them to do the adult thing and think "We're setting a poor example if we play jokes on her too!". If an obnoxious brat had caused one of my friends to break her leg when we were 13, my friends and I would have been like, Alright, we're going to teach this little snot a lesson. (But then again, maybe I just wasn't that mature at 13.)

I just found this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhczFRlBT2E (Gumby theme song) I'm up to this book (again in a Series re-read) and this is one that gets harder and harder to read it's so annoying. I hold by all my earlier comments on this and will just add that Claudia should have even suggested to Betsy that she (B) would have to pay for Claudia's shirt to be dry cleaned. That would have been a logical consequence, though I'm fairly certain Betsy did not know the "value" of C's shirt or that it would require dry cleaning. One thing I always did like about this book was Claudia's conversations with Mimi. So awful that Mimi, sweet, wise, Mimi is killed off in C's next book. :/ I wanted to add that not only did the Sobaks (to our knowledge) do nothing in response to Claudia's accident (other than Betsy's letter, that sounded to me based on her convo with Kristy after the movie), that she didn't even mean it, but they allowed Besty to order new jokes from some other catalog at the end!

Yeah, the Sobak parents are definitely in the running for Most Clueless in the series!

^ i'm sure this has been said before, but even if the sobaks didn't apologize to claudia directly, they at least owed her parents a HUGE apology. if i were mrs kishi i would march right down to the sobak's house and knock betsy's lights out.

The Sobaks should also have owed the Kishis something for medical expenses. I'm sure that CLaud's parents have great insurance and all that, but still....I'd want SOME compensation.

It seemed out-of-the-blue that Sam had the fake stuff for jokes. He was always to do things like the prank calls and the odd jokes like his gifts in LS #15. But I can only recall him using these kinds of things in this book.

^Convenient, huh? The Sobaks most definitely should have been first in line to see how Claudia was and apologize. But then, Mr. and Mrs. Kishi didn't exactly contact them (Sobaks) either.

I thought it was nice of Dawn to bring Claudia junk food while Claudia was in the hospital. I agree with everyone posted about Mrs. Sobak calling the BSC for more sitters. If I were her, I would call to apologize.

Yeah, the lack of apology was really glaring!

^It really was. I think more glaring was that come 2 books later Kristy told Mal that she'd (Mal) would have to finish her job with the Arnold Twins but afterwards, no other Sitter would be expected to take a job with them. Wouldn't that "logic" have made better sense in this book?

I can't stand irresponsible parents - and the Sobaks are defintely irresponsible parents. It's not like Betsy is a rebel teen who is hard to control. She's a CHILD. Take away her stupid jokes and ground her! And apologize to the Kishis for crying out loud!

I wonder how old the Sobak parents were. Betsy was eight, but had a 23-year-old sister. They seem like the kind of parents who got a surprise kid later in life and spend their time indulging her behavior and spoiling her. Or maybe tried for years to have a second kid, and after they got one, decided to turn a blind eye to any bratty behavior.

^I once had a preschooler who may have been in a similar situation. Her father, from his first marriage had an adult daughter, who I think was at least in her 20's when the "surprise" daughter with his new wife came. The mother of the 3-4 year old that I knew, often had parenting issues that sometimes would affect the other kids in my class not to mention her own daughter. Every morning the daughter, who was fine soon after mom left, would literally throw a fit at the idea of mom leaving. Tantrum, kicking, crying, screaming, etc all included. She was a bigger child so it was harder just to pick her up for comfort for any length of time, plus she wouldn't let you, didn't seem to want that. The other problem was she didn't come to school regularly and so possibly every day she did arrive, was semi-new. I won't go into further detail but ultimately she did fine and lol mom did too. I could see the Sobaks being semi muddled or unsure like that in general, though since they didn't even wake up when Claudia got seriously hurt, I am leaning more toward thinking of them as simply irresponsible.

If I was a Kishi I would have appreciated an apology or even just a call to see how Claudia was doing. That said, Betsy wasn't a sociopath who was trying to hurt other people. All she wanted was Claudia's butt to hit the ground when she sat on the swing. Her jokes up to that point were annoying but pretty harmless, and the swing really was just a prank that went very, very wrong.

I just re-read and Claudia said (after she fell) that she was trying to remember what the BSC Members had learned in the first aid class they had taken. Didn't they take that class much later?
