It's a nickname. It's pretty popular in some circles and generations. Sorry. I hope I didn't offend anyone. I realized after I posted that I probably shouldn't have. ;D I have heard the name before and was just commenting on it (shouldn't have - sorry, again ) I won't say any more so I don't jam my foot any further down my throat. ;D I agree that Betsy was just a little kid, which is why I hope that she learned what she did was wrong. It's better if kids learn right from wrong early on and it didn't seem like her parents were doing that great of job teaching her.... I can't speak for everyone, but I'm not offended. I would hope that anyone who goes by the name "Cookie" knows how ridiculous it really is, but there is always someone who will be offended, no matter what. You can't please everyone all the time.

I thought it was funny that when Claudia first sits for Betsy, she offers her cookies that her mom has made, and says her mom's cookies are the best or something. It's like, maybe they couldn't have been bothered to come up with a name, and were just like, "She makes cookies...let's call her Cookie!"

Haha.
I always pictured Betsy's parents as being a bit older, since she has a sister with a baby. Like they thought they could only have one child and then whoops... there's Betsy! I think this accounts for some of their permissiveness.

^ I didn't remember Betsy's sister so hadn't thought of that but it sounds like a very good theory.

Oh yeah, Betsy had a 23-year-old sister that already had a kid, so Betsy was an eight-year-old auntie. I think that would be kinda fun. They'd probably grow up more like siblings than aunt/niece. I'm 14 years older than my niece and I like to think of her like a little sister.

Poor Claudia. The mother was kind of nonchalant about Claudia's accident. I would have stopped baby-sitting for that client in a minute.

The most interesting random tidbits in this one were first on Page 21 where Claudia tells us (following a BSC Meeting) that Dawn has stayed over for dinner (after meetings) at the Kishis' house a few times. Dawn wasn't doing so this night, but, I would have liked getting to read about such an instance. Might have gotten me to be more of a Dawn fan. It was also said Dawn did this when her mother was working late or dating Trip. I wonder if dining with the Kishi's a 2 parent family was sort of Dawn's way of pretending her own parents were still happily married and/or working through their divorce. Then on Page 68, right before Claud is discharged from the hospital, she tells us how "Dawn saved her life by sneaking in junk food" for her (C). I'd assume, certainly hope, that was one time Dawn didn't go off at the mouth in her annoying way about what she was bringing Claud. It was a plain nice thing for Dawn, especially Dawn, to have done. I would not have minded reading first hand about it. A "funny," note, on the cover of this book, I'm guessing based on Page 50's descriptions of Claud's visitors, are supposed to be Jamie and Charlotte. Unless the boy holding the flowers is Buddy. The Barretts did send flowers to the hospital for Claudia. In any case the boy opn the cover looks a lot like Logan and a little like Josh Rocker. If it is "Jamie" my how that 4 year old has grown and toned! Charlotte (or hey maybe Claire--the girl looks like both Charlotte and Claire on over covers) resembles a little older woman. Oh as for the story itself, ITA with what everyone has already said. I am not (never was) into jokes or pranks. I think such antics can begin innocently enough, with no harm in mind, but often time someone ends up being hurt. I love to laugh, have fun, but not with slapstick humor as the medium. I don't think any of the Sobaks truly "got" or were remorseful for Claudia's injury. But then, perhaps neither did Claud's own parents. I am not a fan of suing, certainly as others have said, in this day and age, over almost anything. However, in this case, Rioko and John should have called Cookie and Mr. Cookie , to in no certain terms tell them what was going on. They weren't necessarily to blame for the swing, though, I'd think they should have been aware of it. If they hadn't had time to immediately fix it, knowing their daughter, should have either removed the seat part or tied the whole thing up high. Then there was the BSC's "response." Like their behavior at Jamie's party, the joke war, made me wonder first off lol why I keep reading, talking, thinking about these girls and still like so many of you, wishing I had lived in Stoneybrook and been part of the BSC. No parent should have ever (at least immediately) hired them afterwards. Besty's own parents should have complained bigtime. Completely inappropriate all around.

I don't remember that at all, but it is interesting! It's nice that they kept each other company when Jeff moved back to CA and Stacey was back in NYC. Kind of an odd coincidence that Stacey moved back to Stoneybrook about the same time that Dawn got her new step-family to hang out with.

^I had no recollection of that either. Hmm interesting point. Perhaps Claud and Dawn may have become friendlier had Stacey not come back. I hope Claud didn't drop Dawn the way MA did Kristy. I realize MA/Kristy were much closer and longer than C and D were, just similar idea.

Also, on the cover it looks like Claudia's nightgown is riding up, and if you follow the boy's eyes (it's amusing to imagine it's Logan) and the goofy grin on his face, it looks like 'Logan' is getting a real eyefull Zoar3, you and others on this board have talked about wishing to live in Stoneybrook and be a part of the BSC. It was a fantasy of mine too when I was 12/13. Remember that old Gumby tv show? Gumby and his friends could 'walk into' to books, as though the book covers were doorways, and become part of the stories. I liked to imagine I could enter the BSC books and go to meetings and stuff.

Lol, murderedmymuse, maybe the boy is a younger Logan. Hey with the time warp and all anything is possible! I vaguely remember Gumby. "Once there was a little green ball of clay. GUMBY. Let's see what Gumby will do today. Something about his pony pal Pokey, too. If you have a heart than Gumby's apart of you." I did have both G and P toys. Being able to walk into BSC Land sounds cool to me. Fan fic?

I agree, it was nice reading about Dawn and Claudia being close in this book. There's also a scene between just Kristy and Claudia toward the end of the book, where Claudia is still debating whether to stay with or leave the club and talking about not being able to control your future, that I thought was nice. Did anyone else think this was the weirdest beginning to a BSC book ever??? Claudia is talking about how like "Oh yeah everyone in the BSC knows how Kristy just fantasizes over the idea of wearing food." Whaaaaaaaa? Sure they talk in the books about how she makes gross comments on food, but that's completely different from dreaming about wearing food (and having "buttercream eyelashes", as Claudia says). Honestly, the only thing I could really think about after reading this was that I bet Kristy and Bart are going to get pretty kinky with food when they get older. And on the subject of the unapologetic Sobaks: I got the impression that the Sobaks had NO idea that Betsy was playing a prank when Claudia got hurt. If they did, I'm sure even they wouldn't have had the audacity to call the club. I'm sure Betsy wouldn't have confessed that she knew the swing was broken; I bet all she had to do was tell her parents that she either didn't know it was broken, or she forgot. They don't seem like they would have questioned it.

Even though they're once again doing something old-ish (attending a slapstick film festival), I've always thought it was one of the funniest openings, kind of quirky and light-hearted, and every member is there for it. Also, I like that the descriptions of everyone are in that first chapter, leaving just discussion of the club for chapter two.

Being able to walk into BSC Land sounds cool to me. Fan fic? Was that the Gumby song? I kinda got it in my head now. The song I always get in my head is for the cartoon 'Raggy Dolls' (I think the cartoon is British). "Raggy Dolls, Raggy Dolls, made imperfectly. Raggy Dolls, Raggy Dolls, dolls like you and me." And the 'Gem' theme song is even worse. Truly outrageous I like any Claudia book. I think she might be my favourite. This book reminds me of a book from 'The Gymnasts' series called Bad Break. Cindi breaks her leg ski-ing and considers quitting gymnastics as she's too scared to get back on the horse (as it were) and continue sports.
