^ And of course, in BSC Land, the interviewer was totally impressed! Doesn't she offer Stacey the job right then and there? If so, that probably had more to do with plot than anything else, but still. I find it hard to believe that someone would be that impressed by a 13 year old, especially one who interrupted the interview to go play with dolls. But like I said, this is BSC Land! Everything's possible and totally plausible!

^ I don't remember that Stacey just walked off during the interview. I need to reread, I guess, as that does sound like a bad - rather than good - way to impress a potential employer. Also, remember what 13 means in BSC land .... ;D

That's very unprofessional. Only in BSC-land could you get the job after a stunt like that.

When I was a kid (and even now), I pretended that the members of the BSC were older (at least 15). For some reason, they just didn't seem like 13 and 11 year olds to me. Maybe it made more sense to imagine them as being older because they seem so much older than the 10 year olds (Pike triplets, Jeff Shafer) And plus Hodges made them look like they were somewhere between 17 and 24 after book 4! Does Hodges have his own thread??

^ Yup, he does!
I just reread this one the other day, and I loved it as always. Stacey is so square, it's great. Definitely not the cool sophisticate she claims to be.
One thing that bothered me was the reconciliation between her and the BSC. As soon as her new friends - the ones she ditched the BSC for - turn out to be "bad," Stacey comes crawling back to her old friends. I guess I was hoping for something a bit more dramatic than "I'm sorry for what I said." You'd think that they would all have a lot more to say about what happened during Stacey vs. the BSC, but then, it's just one more problem that isn't really discussed but everything's solved anyway.
Another thing that got on my nerves was Stacey's little sayings: The Big Chill, The Great Divide, SDT (for Stacey's Daily Trauma of figuring out what to wear). They weren't funny and definitely were overused. I'm pretty sure this book was written by Peter L-whatever, so I will blame him.
Something that made all of the above worthwhile? Robert calls Stacey "Toots." Heheh.

I just reread also, and I actually found myself identifying with Stacey. I would definitely have been the square one in a situation like this, and I probably would have let my "friends" take advantage of me, too. I've never really identified with Stacey before; it was always Mallory or Mary Anne.

Word. There was also "HHH" for "Hideous Hair-Flattening Helmet." But lol at "SDT" because I would always tend to read that as "STD" in my head...

I'm probably in the minority here, but i didn't think Stacey's leaving to play with the kids during the middle of the interview was such a bad thing...after all...that was what her job was goign to be, and she was just trying to impress the boss about how good she was with kids *shrugs* She's 13... what can you expect?

^I agree! It's exactly the job she was interviewing for, I thought it was bold of her and I doubt I'd have done it, but if I was interviewing her, I woulda been impressed with her initiative and the way she handled it. It's not like she wandered off to say hello to Claudia or something.

^ Truthfully, I never really gave much thought to her leaving because it didn't seem like that big of deal to me. You're right, though, sotypical that it did show initiative and she was doing something related to the job at least. Actually, going to play with the kids showed that she was a good sitter or at least really could relate to kids.

Just reread and totally agree about the little sayings being annoying. I never noticed this before but they jumped out at me this time. Stacey's friends annoyed me, too. They are the kind of kids I would have (and probably still would ;D) hated being around. As for Stacey walking off to play with the little girl during the interview, I didn't see that much of a problem with it because I'm not sure exactly how much of an "interview" was really going on right then. The way I read it, the woman was just showing her around. It was kind of weird how she spent so much time with the little girl like that but I didn't see it as walking out of an "interview" or anything. I had a bigger problem with the face painting thing and can understand why one of the moms was a bit miffed that Stacey painted her kid's face without permission. One of the kids could have been allergic and that isn't exactly an allergy you would think it necessary to inform a temporary mall daycare center of. At least I wouldn't. The Porters leaving Amy seemed really cruel to me. Maybe there are some situations where this would be okay and some kids who would be fine with it. But this was not one of them. I really felt for Amy - abandoned for 3 weeks (not 3 days - that would have even been different) with people she had never met and only a week to even prepare for this big upheaval. One thing I did like that I noticed for the first time was how one of the BSC members finally acknowledged that it might be a pain for parents to have to call during the 3 hours of meeting times instead of whenever but that they were fine with it for some reason. That's the way I've always overlooked it, too, but have at least considered how that isn't really convenient.

i've never thought the bsc times aren't convenient. i mean they are still available 3 days a week for half an hour, i don't think it'd be too difficult for a parent to wait til then to make a call. i don't remember them discussing this in that book, though, can you elaborate to remind me please
