Dawn was described as being tall, though, wasn't she?
A 13 yr old boy who's 5'10 would likely be lanky, completely ungainly and awkward looking, hunched down to detract from his height. I went to school with a kid who was almost 6' at age 12 or something and his height was anything but attractive.
Also, Kristy was apparently the shortest person in her grade. Is 5' really particularly short for a 13 yr old?

i dont know about the height issue but i did love this book. i think that its one of my favourites. loved seeing dawn shake off her 'individuality' and try to fit in. the whole igneous rock thing was so lame, like she actually thought that was how to be cool.
lewis seemed really nice too. i agree, what was up with that postcard? so not dawn, or i guess that was the point. i liked how she turned him on to vegetarianism too. that dawn, always pushing her ideas and opinons onto everyone else, hahah.

Kristy was apparently the shortest person in her grade. Is 5' really particularly short for a 13 yr old? No, that's about average....remember in the back of "Graduation Day," they had all those random facts? I think one was that the average height of a 13 year old girl was about 5 feet tall.

If that's true, then my body doesn't know that I'm almost 19. I'll be 19 on Sunday, and I'm still , like, 5' 1". I guess I'm like Kristy.

5' is definitely NOT really short for a 13-year-old. I'm twice Kristy's age and I'm 5' tall. When I was actually 13, I was 4'4". I used to feel awful that the other characters were like, "OMG, Kristy is sooooo short!" when I was eight inches shorter than her. I felt like enough of a freak without the BSC compounding it, thankyouverymuch.

^ that's ridiculous. You'd think Ann would've researched this issue a little more. It's like, she thought "hmmm, Kristy supposed to be short. A short person is generally around 5 feet tall" without remembering that she was writing about 13 yr old kids, not adults. But then, the BSC tended to act like mini-adults most of the time, so maybe that accounts for the confusion.
I'm not sure how tall I was at 13, I was always on the shorter side, I suppose (by no means the shortest in my class or anything, although definitely not considered tall), but now I'm 5'5 which I think is around average.

I stopped growing at around 13, and I'm 5'5". And I was tall then, too! Then everyone else grew, and I'm just average height now.

I always felt short, even now. I'm 5' 4", though, which is supposed to be average for American women.

I always thought 5' was short for a 13 year old. But I'm pretty tall, 5'7 (and 3/4ths..) at 23 and I think I've been around this height for a loooooong time, so I was pretty tall at 13.

I can't tell the difference between someone who's 5' and 5'1" or 2" or 3" just by looking at them, so unless everyone else at SMS was a lot taller than that how would they even know that Kristy was THE SHORTEST GIRL IN THE 8TH GRADE. Did she run around comparing her height with everyone?

^ haha, never thought of that. They should've made Kristy significantly short, then she would be likely to stand out as the "shortest kid in eighth grade".

Maybe they get measured yearly? Or you can tell in school photos... They always made us line up in height order for school photos, so you *could* see who the shortest and tallest people were.

My favorite thing about this book is the way Dawn is sort of hurt by how into the makeover Mary Anne gets at first. Ouch!
Even though I like this one (and LOVED the outfits! The only draw back to the awesome outfits is how they never really describe how Dawn dresses on a regular basis -- I know, I know, California Casual, but WHAT THE HELL DOES THAT MEAN?), and I really like the idea of watching someone who is very individualistic question themself in a big way (especially at that age), I still can't quite get over how little of Dawn's ACTUAL individualism has ever been shown. Besides staunchly sticking to her health food diet, I can't really think of an example. Just saying someone is an individual doesn't really mean much.

^ Also the fact that Dawn was always described as easy-going and laid-back. Uh, when?

^ She seemed pretty laid back in the earlier books, when Kristy and her were just getting used to each other. (To me) I dunno
