^ nah, I remember my sister doing that with her barbies, just as she started to grow out of them. Her barbies looked very unfortunate in the end, all with colored crew cuts, pins stuck in their noses and ears (as "piercings") etc

^ I'm glad I never had a sister to mess with my toys. ;D I think being an only child is one thing that makes me like Stacey and Char's relationship so much because I can really relate to having a big "sister" or little "sister". I like doing things with my "sister" (older when I was a kid or younger now) when I want to and then going my own way when I'm tired of her. ;D

I think this is my favorite BSC book. I really like Stacey in it. I also love how Claudia describes the members of the Baby-sitting Agency. "they hang out at the mall, and hate school. You know, that kind of kid." Oh Claudia. If you only knew your future.

Haha! That line from her always strikes me when I read it. Also, "I wouldn't trust them farther than I could throw a truck." It just sounds un-Claudia like.
This is my favorite Stacey book.

^ I wonder how far Claudia could throw a truck. ;D I do like this one, too, but not so much the stuff about the Agency. I just can't get into it - though some parts are funny (the signs ;D) and I like how it all ends with Jamie and them talking to Mrs. Newton.

I really, really like how Stacey's "voice" was written in this one. She comes across as mature, with a decent perspective on things, but she's still 12 and seems 12. I like that even though she's supposed to be this tough, sophisticated New Yorker, she's also a loyal friend who just wants to fit in.

I also liked Stacey's "voice" in this book. I agree that she seems more her age in this book instead of like a mini-adult. I don't think this one was much longer than the average BSC book, but there was so much packed into it (in a good way). There was the rise and fall of the Baby-Sitters Agency, Lucy Newton's birth, Stacey's trip to NYC with the doctor thing and patching things up with Laine, etc. IMO, this book could have stood just fine on its own if there were no other BSC books ever written, it was so good.

I agree, it was action packed. I always remember the candy store on the front... Yummm... Stacey looks so different on this cover too, actually 12, not 16.

I loved this book so much and was rereading it often after I first bought it. I`m sure I still have it in my room. I`m thinking of buying the manga for it.

^You should! The BSC graphic novels are great. I read all of them and wish there were going to be more. I remember thinking that the graphic novels wouldn't do the books justice, but happily I turned out to be wrong.

Raina's a big-time BSC fan herself so she definitely did them right. Updates notwithstanding (dawn's dvd player, etc)

reading this discussion made me go back and read the whole book again :] i love how sweet and friendly stacey is. of course, it IS her first book, so her character was normal and not made into a stuck up meanie yet. it's fun to read about stacey going out of the way for other people, and doing something embarrassing for the sake of her friends. i had completely forgotten about stacey's relationship with pete. he's kind of a jerk for asking laine out, considering she's stacey's bff. and stacey encourages it! i guess she has too many boyfriends to care about all of them at once :]

I just reread this one. It's weird, there are some books (like the early ones) that I remember so little about, that it's making me question if I ever actually read them when I was little. There are other books that I remember in great detail, so it's weird that I remember nothing about the others.
Anyway, I think I did read this one when I was younger. The only thing that was familiar to me was reading about the older girls from the Baby-sitters Agency, because I remember having a mental image of those girls being sooooo much older, what with their cigarette smoking and boyfriend having. I was so surprised to reread the book and see they were 13 years old!
I think I'm more familiar with the later books (for example, Stacey's Book), because in my memory, Laine was portrayed pretty clearly as a villain in the books. It was weird to read this book and see them end the book painting Laine in a positive light.
The part where Stacey is commenting on the price of concessions at the movies is so jarring! She says in Stoneybrook, you can get a small soda and a small popcorn at the movies for $0.95...seriously? Even in 1986? It probably costs close to $10 now to get a small soda and small popcorn at the movies! Has inflation really been that severe?
I like that the kids seem more, y'know, kidlike in the early books. David Michael totally seems like a 6-year-old (oh, and btw, this is the book where Kristy says David Michael likes to watch the cheerleaders and learn the cheers and then do the cheers for other people...lol), and Charlotte (7-years-old) actually sucks her thumb in this book!!!
And to add to the old discussion of Kid Kits: I always pictured Kid Kits to be about the size of milk crates - I never pictured them as shoebox size. So if they kept the Kid Kits open topped, they could easily carry some board games in there.
