I was strep, which isn't life threatening or anything but can be pretty bad. (At least I think it was strep. I'm not positive), but I always got the impression that the fever was the big deal. And from what I rembember, it was 104 and Jenny was pretty listless before MA called Dawn and the ambulance. High fevers can be really scary and sometimes dangerous, especially for little kids. Also, how long did the girls stay at the hospital? If they were there for a while, maybe some of the $ was for extra baby-sitting hours??? (I know baby-sitters actually make pretty good money these days, even kids. Maybe I should give it a try ;D) Yeah, I think the fever was the main cause for concern. Considering they can be life threatening or have life-changing consequences, I can understand the parents being so grateful the 13 yr old babysitter had done the right thing that they'd think it was worth $50.

I think $20-25 would've made more sense. That still seemed like a lot of money to me at that age. But 50 works too...I always thought 10 wasn't nearly enough, even as a kid.

But would $20 be enough to make the girls back away, speechless ;D
As a kid, I didn't think $10 was enough, but because the BSC were so excited about it, I figured that maybe it was more impressive than I thought!

I never thought too much about it, but maybe 20 each? I doubt Mr P would have handed them 50 each!

^ Maybe today he would have but not then. But today, how much do girls get just for babysitting? It's not usually only $3 an hour (isn't that what the BSC was excited about? ;D) anymore, at least not around here from what I understand.

10$ seems to be the going rate.

Yeah, fevers can be a big cause for concern when children are involved. Anyone remember the opening scene in "City of Angels"? When I saw that, I immediately thought of Jenny P.

Especially when the something like a fever could end up being something really serious like meningitis... It's always best to call a doctor in situations like that.

^ Totally agree. And in my cousin, just the fever itself was enough to make her stop breathing. Scary for me just remembering it. That's what I always think about with this book.

The Newtons invited 16 children for a 4-year-old's birthday party!!?? Crazy, beyond what I thought of from Mrs. Newton. No one had the one-guest-per-year-of-age rule, I guess.

^ I didn't realize they had 16 kids. That's way too many, even for an older elementary aged kid. No wonder she needed the whole BSC. ;D

I'm trying to think > Ithink the largest parties i had was when I was 5, 6, and 9. 5 and 9 probably had more kids.. I dont remember how many though, but i invited pretty much my whole 3rd grade class and some other kids from my street to the party... and it was at a roller skating rink. 5, there was just a bunch of kids... 6.... I dont know. 10 mbe? or less.

I might have had like 10 at my 5th birthday but also had all my family there so had about 5 aunts and uncles and grandparents to help in addition to my parents. And it was outdoors with a "carnival" theme so lots of room to run around. ;D

I was never allowed more than 10 kids to a birthday party, which is perfectly reasonable IMO!

And it was outdoors with a "carnival" theme so lots of room to run around. ;D That sounds like fun! My birthday is in the summer (August 4th) so my childhood birthday parties were always held outside in my backyard. The guests were mostly family and close family friends (both my mom and dad's sides) because most of my school friends were either on vacation or at camp or something of that nature (it never really bothered me that much because I was shy, still am). But there were still quite a few kids for me to play with and we would play musical chairs and Bozo Buckets and any other party game you can think of ;D.
