MA and Kristy are so perfectly drawn as two best friends fighting—Ann and Beth Perkins had to have acted exactly like this when they were kids!

It's also an age-appropriate fight. They're immature and they sound 12. Later in the series they are mini-adults and the regular adults are always fawning over them and how responsible they are, so I love that they embarrass themselves in front of Mrs. Newton.

I tend to prefer the later redesigns for the covers but the original US cover (which I saw much later) is one of my favorites, Mary Anne looks so young and yet not too young, right depiction for her age and in-character (and with the worried but determined mood) and also good as contrast for how she later changes.
I do prefer the name Alma for her mother.

Abigail is a very New England name. It’s strange that she was from there for one book and then became Iowan Alma for the rest of the series. I wonder who made the change and why.

Those names feel really similar to me, like I imagine parents who pick Abigail for a baby name would also pick Alma. It was weird that they changed it after publication, but the effect of the switch seems small. My theory is that someone at Scholastic had a grandma named Alma

^ Or perhaps they had a daughter named Alma. I knew another student named Alma back in high school.

Claudia was the one who started it. Sure Kirsty forgot to offer the job around but no one does it more than Claud does. In every book so far Claud has forgotten to offer jobs around. Then she gets all defensive and takes it out on Stacey who wasn't on her side. Then it just escalated from there.
They are 12 and still immature. Even Stacey and Claud who think they're more mature but aren't really. Just because they wear clothes different from Kristy and Mary Anne and are into boys it certainly doesn't Stacey and Claud more mature than them.

I found an original copy of this book recently and read the first few chapters. It has such a weird, formal vibe. Who would've guessed that this Richard, who doesn't let Mary Anne say "hey" or "yeah", would one day do an underwear race? I know Richard changed once he got married, but he loosened up a lot even just after this first book. Like I don't remember them saying grace again.

And I guess he wasn't ready for Mary Anne to finally stand up to him.
