I'm reading this now and I agree with virgoscorpio that Mallory's pants are awful on the cover, although I really like her sweater. That mulberry sort of colour is nice.

^ It's not so much the khakis as the fit, especially around the crotch area.

K, as long as it's just about the pants, she is 11 after all even if she looks like a 21 year old or Robin Sparkles

^She does with Jessi and Mr. and Mrs. Pike. IIRC, they go shopping in the morning have lunch at Casa Grande than go see a movie and possibly shop a little more? I have no memory of what Mal bought other than she was hyper aware of the Teeter Streeter, bookstore (Emily Dickinson), and other things that reminded her of her siblings. Thus, "Explorer Day" the following Saturday was born.

I actually love the mall trip at the end of this one! Sometimes I really like the friendship between Mal and Jessi, because their friendship is just so simple and innocent, and it really makes them seem like 11-year-olds. I liked when they went into Zingy's and Mal was trying to get Jessi to try on some crazy boots (I'm picturing, like, some insane S&M boots).

Also, I'm sure that for the Pike kids, a trip to the mall with one of your parents BY YOURSELF is a big deal. Not to mention that you can bring a friend along to boot. Mallory was probably splooging at that moment.

I'm a fan of How I Met Your Mother....and Robin Sparkles LOL Sandcastles in the saaaaaaaaaaaaand (like Fire Island haha) That's a good comparison, I didn't think of it, but now that you mention it, Mallory's ridiculous outfit probably looked like what Robin wore. Didn't she wear hot pink tights and a denim jacket with charms on it or somethig like that? I swear, I have to look for the book to check it out again.
LMAO @ S&M boots, too funny. I think she kept seeing things her siblings would like. One thing I recall is a poetry book Vanessa would have liked and a toy that made her think of Nicky. I also love reading about BSC mall trips. I thought the scavenger hunt was really sweet at the end and how she had presents for them all.

I think this is the only book where both of Mal's parents are constantly asking her to do something. It seems like in others, she either steps in automatically or is "hired." Still not sure why both Dee and John had to attend an emergency meeting of the library board (last minute) on a Saturday but then there would be no scene with MA when Mal "sees the light and talks to her parents." I still feel awful for poor Buddy and his foot.
This has nothing to do with this book but I wanted to thank everyone up-thread for making me laugh last night (I read through all these pages then) over the "birds" comments. I needed the smile.

Still not sure why both Dee and John had to attend an emergency meeting of the library board (last minute) on a Saturday I'm trying to think of something that would even warrant an emergency meeting of the library board...my library has a board meeting once a month and the agendas are usually run-of-the-mill boring stuff. Dee Pike was a library board member, correct? That means, since Mrs. Kishi is the head librarian, that Mrs. Pike was technically one of her bosses. A library director has to answer to the board and is evaluated by them annually, just like us lowly regular librarians are evaluated by our bosses.

You are the perfect person to answer this, Candykane. I just checked and it's on page 108 (Original Cover). The library called the emergency meeting (The Pikes think) because of financial trouble. I think early on, Dee was a volunteer of some type at the library. In at least one book before this, it is mentioned that she is on the board. Wow, that is cool about Claudia's mom, I never thought of that. I do think it is awesome Dee is on the board, too bad we never got to read about her doing something for the library...possibly even with Claudia's mom.
