The Peter Lerangis Effort would be a pretty good name for a rock band. oh my god, yes. i haven't read this book in a long time, so maybe i missed it. but didn't the kishis want to drive claudia to the studio the first day? it seems strange that claudia had to depend on a friend's brother instead of her parents. if i were a parent, i would want to experience that with my child. i wouldn't defer it to anybody else.

Sparklymouse, that is really interesting about "Kristy and Claudia being best friends without the label." I never thought of that. It's true that Claudia and Stacey seemed to (mainly) talk about fashion, boys, or Claudia's art, oh and the occassional math problem. Whereas Claudia and Kristy, when they did interact, had a lower-key (except in this one oviously), almost more "natural" relationship. I'm not saying talking about boys and clothes is un-natural for 13 year old girls, of course it's not. I am terribly trying to say that with Claudia and Kristy there didn't always have to be something "bigger" to talk about. Does that make any sense at all? I would have liked seeing the two of them interact more especially since Kristy was said to always be early for BSC meetings. It would also make sense that once MA dumped Kristy for Dawn, Kristy might reach out to her second oldest childhood friend. I love the name of the rock band.

^ kristy and claudia is one of my favorite unofficial combinations. it's pretty painful to read about their interactions in this book, but i still love that kristy is there for claudia when she first goes to the studio. claudia's relationship with stacey is definitely more natural than stacey's relationships with a lot of people, but i know what you mean about something else being there. i had friendships that were based mostly on impressing each other, and one-upping each other, but with my friend abby i never have to do that. it seems like claudia feels that way about kristy -- she knows she doesn't have to try to impress her because kristy genuinely looks up to her, not the clothes or the boys or anything else.

I do like the Claudia and Kristy dynamic, but I still love Claudia and Stacey.
I felt like this book was perhaps thought up to put Ashley back into Claudia's life and replace Stacey - or perhaps I am just thinking too much on it b/c that obviously didn't happen!
I did like the end when Stacey calls Claudia but agree with others that calling at the radio station, really??? Call at home so you can chat in private or something.

^ Oldhickory. You said that a million times better than I did. Thanks. I'm thinking, probably way too much about it, but you know, that's the fun of being on these boards, if Claudia saw even a little bit of Mimi in Kristy. What I mean is that underneath the gung-ho attitude or at times, not so positive zeal, Kristy was a good person who probably did care about Claudia because she was Claudia, sort of like Claud herself came to realize about Ashley (that A did not feel that way) in #12. Wiggirl, I liked when Stacey called, too but totally agree about calling the station. Also, was that call "on-air?" I forgot if Stacey called some sort of private line or not. I also have to admit, I thought Stacey came back to the BSC (almost like nothing happened) too soon. I think I would have rathered, Stacey/Claudia or Stacey someone else becoming friends agin (for a little longer time) than just "Oh I'm back guys, can I rejoin?"

I had no thoughts of Ashley replacing Stacey, she was like that unwanted rodent that visits once a year

it would have been really awesome if ashley replaced stacey though. stacey dumped claudia (the whole bsc really) so it would have been really satisfying if claudia decided to replace her with someone stacey never liked. of course i hate the idea of "replacing" friends because friends aren't disposable, but during this time stacey thought she was awesome and this would have shown her that she isn't all that.

I wanted there to be a book where Claudia was close to getting diabetes or getting it cause of too much candy Glad it didn't happen though the Karen's Chicken Pox book happened

I think in BSC-land the break up of Stacey/BSC and Stacey/Claudia probably only lasted a month or so. If it had been "real" time, I would hope Claudia would have at least become closer to Kristy and possibly (gasp) her own family so she wasn't so broken up over Stacey. ITA that friends are not interchangeable. In Stacey's case it seemed like that was exactly what she (S) was trying to do. At some level, Claudia was waiting to be chosen back. I never liked that. It was realistic of a 13 year old but because that type of thing happened so often in Stoneybrook, (Laine, Shannon, MA), the message wasn't too good, especially for the intended readers.

I liked the interaction between Claudia and Ashley in this book. It sounded like it was a lot of fun working at a radio station. I thought that Kristy's attempts to get on the radio show were funny and annoying at the same time.

I remember that my sister got this book when we were growing up (she's a year older than me) and then I later took it from her collection when she lost interest. She loved it too, and Claudia was her favourite sitter. I always felt that the radio show sounded so cool. Claudia also looked cool on the cover, and I always wondered who that girl was (not ever thinking it would be Ashley AND also, sometimes, thinking it was a dude or a lesbian. She could look like a hippie guy, you know?)

i always thought mallory's oogly oogly beast stories were funny. also, re: the claudia/kristy dynamic, i also always thought it was SO stupid how the girls had to have these assigned "best friends" pairs (and that mary anne gets to have two for some reason, probably because she's the sensitive one). you'd think it was one of kristy's rules or something. it does make sense for 13 year old girls to want to have clear definitions on who their BEST friend was, but they act like adults in every other way so whatever. i liked that when abby joined the club she wasn't immediately assigned to a "best friend" that we had to read about in the chapter twos.

i also loled at all kristy's dumb ideas for the show, mainly the barrett/dewitt play in which she kept shouting about mud all over the floor and "marilyn and carolyn and kristy and the major league mystery". thank you but no.

^seriously. Kristy is so corny... The Oogly Oogly Beast sounds like a cute idea for a kid's book.

^It really did (does). I wish Mal had tried her hand at writing/illustrating "his" story. That type of entry (should) would have won a short story contest more than her "Valery Spike" play anyway did for school credit.
