i liked that when abby joined the club she wasn't immediately assigned to a "best friend" that we had to read about in the chapter twos. I wonder if Abby ever felt left out because she didn't have a best friend in the club?

^ i don't think it was ever mentioned, but i would think it would be something she would have been proud of, or at least not bothered by it. everyone else's lives revolved around the club and abby had a bit more independence. she was really the only one we ever see hanging out with non-club family on a regular basis, and she does activities outside of chapter twos.

^ I actually think Abby would have been great at hosting a radio show like Claud did....I almost wish that this book had happened later in the series so she could have!

The only time I remember Abby being a bit bothered by being alone or the "outsider" was when the club split up in Kristy's Worst Idea. She was upset because she didn't have the connections that the other girls did and thought she'd not get jobs because she was the new girl. Like oldhickory said, she seemed pretty independent and didn't act like she needed other people for entertainment. She had the most veg out at home moments that I remember reading about. (Mary Anne probably would have beaten her if pesky Logan ever left her alone.)

I feel like Lerangis does some of his best work when writing Claudia books. Maybe because his style and tone is quite fitting with her personality. I think of him using acronyms a lot which would appeal to Claud's dislike of spelling and making things easier. I also found he added some new traits to Kristy as well, as she seemed more humorous and full of jokes than in other books. If you think about it, that wouldn't have happened a bit later on in the series because it would be Abby taking over that role. I always remember Claudia's gross lunch of chipped beef with cream sauce. Yummmm. Although, I have to admit ... I probably would have eaten it I almost wish that another character besides Ashley was chosen as the assistant. It would have been nice to see another character either introduced or more developed. I don't get how Claudia can't spell "Four". I know she can't spell but seriously? That has to be up there in her top spelling doozies. Why wouldn't she have just written "4"? This girl can sew entire outfits together and create a Picasso out of peanuts and yet she can't spell four

I finished reading this one last night and it was just OK. I loved how proud Janine was of Claudia for winning the contest. Her getting out sparkling cider for a toast definitely made up for Mr. and Mrs. Kishi's lukewarm reactions.
I liked seeing Claudia interact with Ashley. It's always nice to see the girls interact with someone outside the club. It's even better when it's not just a one-off character that is never seen or heard from again (like Jessi with Elise).
Ashley was a totally different person in this book. Pretty much no mention of art at all! It seemed like Claudia and Ashley had hardly spoken or even seen each other since #12. I figured they still saw each other at art class, but maybe they weren't in the same one anymore.
Kristy was kind of annoying and pushy about getting on the show. I could have done without that little subplot.

When Claudia decided to have a call-in segment, did anyone else think Stacey was going to call in on the air? I'm glad they didn't end up doing that!

I thought how stacey called at the end of the book was tastefully done, and was happy to hear they were talking again It was also nice seeing Claudia and Ashley interact again and learning how to work as a team

This was the first BSC book I read that had Ashley in it. Now I look back, she did feel less like the original Ashley Wyeth that Ann wrote. That Ashley was more...well, serious and pretentious. That Ashley wouldn't have signed up to be part of the radio show, because it would take time away from her art. Plus she's a lot more easygoing here. I have to say, the scene when Claudia and Stacey talked near the end made even me feel emotional.

To me Ashley suddenly showing up again and, with no explanation, having a more balanced attitude was great. It was really nice to see Claudia get a new interest and be successful in it.
My favorite part was Claudia and Ashley perpetuating the tie of was Aladdin or The Lion King better.

Maybe Ashley was featured in this book because Stacey was out of the club at the time. The other members still had their BFFs but Claud didn’t. I hadn’t thought of it this way before.

I've just had a thought. Claudia says that Stacey is currently not her best friend in the first show "I used to have a best friend, but not anymore. I really miss her." Why is it they still talk to each other? They still act like friends when they see each other. Stacey said she listened to every show, and they both hope they can be friends again. Just before Stacey rejoins the club, after breaking friends with those other girls, she mentions discussing what happened with Claudia. And yeah, I know she's awkward when she signs Dawn's petition in the previous book...my point is, I don't think it's reasonable to suggest that Stacey is not Claudia's friend any more when they still clearly have a lot of affection for each other and still get along reasonably well outside of the club, they still talk, and they both wish they were still friends and that they would like to be such in the future.
Oh, and on the subject of Ashley taking time away from her art, I think she probably had a talk with a guidance counsellor, who told her she was becoming too one-sided and ought to do something else for a while. For whatever reason, the radio show sounded fun to her, and she discovered that life can be multi-faceted, even if art was going to be her number one focus.

I like Ashley, but they made her kind of dull here. And it irritated me that Claudia talks about how Ashley nearly destroyed her relationship with her BSC friends, like a) the BSC were OTT horrible to her, it wasn't one-sided and b) it wasn't Ashley's fault that Claudia flaked on meetings, etc. She didn't have a gun to Claudia's head!

Lol, OK Claudia. She looks like a giant cramped inside of a dollhouse.
