Lurlene McDaniel made a whole career out of writing about sick kids, lol. I remember reading an interview with Jacqueline Wilson where she said she couldn't write about a child with a terminal illness partly because she's known so many brave kids like that herself. She feels writing about a child dying would be too scary for the kids who still have a chance, and writing about a child getting better would anger the kids who knew they weren't going to recover. As it was, she wrote a book called Lola Rose which features a mother with breast cancer. Her chances of getting better are improving, but we don't know if she will. However, there's security for Lola Rose herself and her little brother because even if she doesn't survive, they've got a lovely, responsible auntie who'll look after them. As for this book, we obviously know that Danielle goes back into remission in book #82, but we still don't know if she's going to get completely better. The ambiguous ending doesn't say much. And after that book, we never see Danielle again and the Robertses stopped calling the BSC for some reason. Maybe they were embarrassed about calling again after Jessi and Stacey got Danielle's friends to make up with her after she crashed the car. So we have no idea if Danielle beat her illness or not.
