I loved to dress up Barbies and cut their hair (not necessarily play with them all the time). And I wanted to experiment with hairstyles, and it was really easy to just slice off the hair with a butcher knife. Granted, it would always ruin the cheap Barbie hair because cutting it with a knife, as opposed to scissors, would cause the hair to bunch up at the tips where the knife sliced through. So it looked really stiff and clumpy. I wouldn't recommend it, haha.

The fashion at the time was what Stacey was wearing on the cover, not pink overalls and big black glasses, unfortunately. I would give my Barbies blunt cuts like Tess's, too! (With scissors )

I cut one Barbie's hair all the way off and pretended she had cancer.

^ I did that to many of my sisters' Barbies and she was pissed (especially her Ariel Barbie). BUT, to my defense, I didn't mean to make her bald. The haircuts just got progressively shorter and shorter...

Definitely not my favorite BSC book, but then I don't think any of the newer ones are. I didn't really like anyone in this book, with the possible exceptions of Barbara and Kristy. Stacey was unpleasant, but I don't think she MEANT to be unpleasant. I think that she genuinely thought that Tess needed help and wanted to help her. She was a bit dense in that she never seemed to pick up that Tess didn't want any of her "help". Abby was pretty weird about Tess being weird, but she probably thought it was funny or something. That girl has a unique sense of humor. Tess was actually pretty unpleasant herself. I feel like maybe she thought she was to cool for Stacey, what being from Paris (or some weird version of Paris where everyone wears pink overalls and track suits... I was there in 2001 and didn't notice this trend) and all. Alan Gray appears to have morphed from being an annoying middle school boy to being a giant a-hole. This behavior would be more what I would expect from Cokie Mason. I don't think my school would have taken the teasing even close to as far as the SMS kids took it. They were beyond cruel, what with throwing things at the poor girl because she has a funny nose and wears pink.
The sub-plot of this book was super lame. I read this book last night and if I had not read through these posts I wouldn't have even remembered it.

This book didn't seem realistic to me at all. I find it hard to relate to someone coping with bullying by largely ignoring it, I guess... when I was bullied and people called me names I was VERY aware of what people said about me and it was miserable. I also hate whenever they describe someone as "really tall" and they wind up being 5'9" or something-- I was 6'3" in eighth grade (hence the bullying, but it's not like I could do anything about it!), 5'10" in sixth.
I also totally don't buy that the pink getup with the black glasses was cool in Paris. Those black glasses definitely weren't cool until, like, 2010.

I didn't think Tess sounded so bad. I guess it was her size and that she was described as "looking like a pig", but still! I think I had an issue more so with the author's choice of description of Tess. Also, SMS turned into a mean school here. I was just thinking that it seemed a bit out of place for the school and then I remembered the Spirit War.

I guess the previous owner of my book didn't like Tess much either, because she/he punched holes in her face on the cover, like with a pushpin or something. And like some others have said - she looks like a skinny string bean on the cover, but in the book she was described as large (not fat, but broad shouldered and big boned).

That reminds me of my cover of The Secret Life of Mary Anne Spier where the previous owner drew in long hair in black Sharpie marker (guess they didn't like MA's Makeover!) and crossed out Spier and wrote Spider (I think I mentioned this in a previous post, probably the one for that specific book). Maybe it was the same owner? haha

Since Stacey has been mentioned as having a pig collection, I was hoping that would come up at some time in the book. (Like, when she talks about Petunia Pig, she could have mentioned she had a stuffed version or something.)

The main thing that I'm bothered about is that everyone is so mean. Like, seriously, does ANYONE at SMS heard of moral fibre? I don't think Tess was too fair on Stacey. She should have told her straight about not trying to "help" her earlier. That said, maybe it wasn't the best move Stacey could've made, but then, I would've rather steered her in the direction that made her fit in better than tell her some kids were making fun of her.

This book made me disgusted. It was the things that Stacey said about Tess, like how she needs a lot of help. Like some people on this thread mentioned, the message should've been about accepting people how they are, and being yourself. I thought the story looked interesting which is why I wanted it. This book was also shorter. P.S. I skipped over the subplot entirely!

The fashion in these books is always hilarious. Basically, you can wear anything if you're thin and pretty. Woe betide any girl embracing grunge, goth or piercings. It's babyish to be too femme, but girls wearing short shorts, halters etc. are Too Adult. You should look as pretty as possible (at 13! Patriarchy starts young, I guess) but effortlessly. The fact that Stacey thinks Tess' clothes are hideous until she realises they're from Paris...🙄 (And of course, Tess still has to be a fashion clone, just a Parisian one. God forbid someone just be allowed to wear what they want!)

Yeah, I agree that Stacey was pretty gross. She still hates Tess's clothes but since Tess meets the Parisian standard, Stacey says it's okay and leaves her alone. Couldn't she have just left her alone because Tess wasn't interested? Or because Tess said no? Gosh.
