Just read this one over the weekend, and I don't remember ever really caring for it when I was a kid, but I absolutely LOVED it. I honestly think it may be one of my new faves. I don't even like Claudia, she's my least favorite so I don't really look forward to her books. I loved the relationship between Claudia and Shea. I loved how he helped her, too. I thought it was really sweet, especially the note he wrote her. So cute. And the plot with Stacey tutoring Claud was pretty funny, as well

I liked this one, although I cannot accept that Claudia also does not have a learning disability, which was finally confirmed. The secret-admirer subplot was sweet and I enjoyed Claud's journals.

The Claudia not having a learning disorder things is really annoying. But besides that, I really like this book too. I love the interaction between Claudia and Shea and I loved the secret journal - although it was very predictable that Stacey would find it. The secret admirer thing was so sweet! And I loved the girls' outfits, haha

As soon as Claudia mentioned the secret journal I absolutely KNEW Stacey would find it. Unbelievably predictable. I would've been surprised if she HADN'T found it.

Claudia's outfit for the surprise party that they think was staged by Cokie: "kelly green socks," "orange-red lipstick," "aqua sneakers." What's so bad about that outfit?

This title makes me think dirty, unBSC things. I always think Shea is Claudia's friend friend, not her freind friend.

Doesn't sound particularly different to anything Claudia wears on a normal day. I'm obviously not the only one who reads dirty unBSC things into many of the books. Like the one - can't remember which, possibly Logan Likes Mary Anne - where the girls were shopping for new clothes for MA to wear to the dance and MA claimed she didn't need to get [new] underwear! The way the scene was written was quite ... umm, **gets mind out of gutter**

I'm in the middle of rereading this one, and I have one question: why did the BSC members automatically assume those notes were for themselves individually when they had "BSC" written on them and were always delivered to club headquarters during meeting time? No boy who wanted to send one of them a note would be dumb enough to do so in that way. Well, probably.

I can’t stand the title (the crossed off “friend”) but liked this book. I can see how Claudia actually could be a good tutor and it reinforces my current opinion that she isn’t dumb but just lazy and doesn’t try because she can’t live up to Janine. I loved the Rodowsky boys in this book. I liked when they were playing baseball and Shea was encouraging his brothers and how Jackie and Archie thought up the idea to send the note to the sitters. I thought that was so sweet how the kids got together to send the notes to the sitters and wanted to treat them at the Rosebud. I didn’t think the girls were all that far off thinking a boy might have sent them the notes considering some of the boys of Stoneybrook who might do something like that – Phantom Phone Calls comes to mind. Also might be something Sam would do. Anyway, I had it figured out but the girls would have had no way of knowing, really. Not much else remarkable about this book but I liked it and am glad I reread.

I'm still not done with this one, probably because I think it's kind of boring and Claudia is really annoying me. I'm sorry, is it just me or is she kind of bitchy to Stacey? Yeah, maybe Stacey was being hard on her a little bit but clearly Claudia needs a lot of help, and can't focus. So Stacey needs to be hard on her! Considering Claudia would be in big trouble if she didn't do well on this test, she shouldn't have acted that way.
On another note, it's weird how times can change how you view a character. When I was younger, Claudia was my second favorite. (Probably because of how "cool" and "sophisticated" she was supposed to be...I was always drawn to characters like that.) But now I really don't care for her too much. And I can't really pinpoint why.

I just reread this one and actually really liked it. I enjoyed reading about Claudia and Shea's relationship and like reading about Claudia tutoring because it shows that she can accomplish things when she tries. As for Stacey and the tutoring, I agree that Claudia was obnoxious to her but the way Stacey handles it doesn't usually work well for a tutor. I kind of find this situation funny (though not sure why ;D) since it makes me think about how hard I have to work not to be like Stacey with all of the Claudias that I've tutored. Even if they do need the discipline, the way Stacey goes about it tends to get much worse results (in my experience) than the way Claudia deals with Shea. I especially loved the subplot and found it so sweet that the kids treated the sitters to ice cream. ;D Claudia was always my least favorite as a kid but for some reason, I like her a lot more now.

I think it would be really awkward, though, to have your friend, who's supposed to be your equal, treating you like you need discipline. I don't blame Claudia for getting ticked off. I wish they had included an illustration of Claudia's caricature of Stacey.

^ I totally agree. This book is a perfect example of why friends and peers really shouldn't tutor each other. Would have also enjoyed the caricature. ;D One thing I will say is Claudia did some writing in her secret journal and I think any writing is better than none. ;D

I used to have a laissez-faire attitude to this book. It was kind of one of those BSC books that I pushed aside, not really caring about. However, re-reading this book, I actually really enjoyed it!
Some things bothered me though. Like how Shea can spell favourite or baseball, but can't even spell his own name!
I laughed when Claudia says, at the beginning of Chapter 13, "Normally I don't mind being in the closet." *giggle*

I liked Shea and Claudian's relationship in this book. Stacey was super annoying. Claud shoulda smacked her.
