^I'm pretty sure parental consent has always been required here (in the US). I know when I was about 16 I wanted to get my cartilege pierced but my parents wouldn't go with me, so I couldn't. That was 7 years ago. Unless it's changed, you can't even get your ears pierced without a parent being present if you're under 18.

^ wow, parental consent probably is required for all that now (I dunno) but body piercing only became really fashionable in the late 90s/early 00s so maybe there was no real cause for enforcing rules before then. Tattoos have always been restricted to over 18s, though.

What struck me as odd about Sunny's navel piercing was that she seemed to have gotten it done in a salon- ie: a place where people get their ears pierced. Do salons *do* body piercings? I thought they'd only use guns and the thought of piercing someone's navel with a gun is enough to make me barf, as the BSC would say. Guess that gives me an excuse to go digging around for that book...
(Maybe the big deal about piercing tied in with the BSC's all-too-obvious fear of needles?)

^ it could've been a body-piercing salon (or maybe that's how they're referred to in BSC land) ... no way could you get a navel piercing with the gun *shudders*

Yeah, it kinda seemed like she was doing it at like a Claire's type place, which would never actually happen.

Mallory's nose must've been one hideous sight if Jessi was so outraged that the Pikes wouldn't allow her to get a nose job at eleven yrs old! This made me laugh soo much!

About the ear piercing thing, I don't see the big deal about letting kids get their ears pierced. I got mine done when I was two. Unfortunately, I can't wear them because my ears swell, bleed, and get infected if I wear earrings for extended periods of time. Ugh. Honestly, though, I don't see the big deal as long as they're done safely and properly.

Ear piercing thing: I had to beg my mom to let me get my ears pierced. I finally got them pierced when I turned 15. WHy that age? beats me. It was convenien,t we were at the mall with my friends for my birthday and we saw the place, and I ran to the bar where mom was drinking (um..yeah) and begged her. She relented, and then she got her ears double pierced for her midlife crisis. (and a year later she got her belly button pierced for the same reason :eye roll:) Anywya, the novelty wore off, but when I was 18 i got second holes in my ears... i recently got my first hole in my right ear repierced cause it had closed up because i never bothered to wear earrings...figures.

Ear piercing is a strange thing. My niece is 8 and is dying to get her 2nd hole pierced. I had to wait til I was 11 to get my 2nd one done (I wonder if Mal would be jealous?) and honestly now I think that is kind of young and I wonder why my mom allowed it. A few years later she signed for me to get my 3rd done and then cartilege. I begged for an eyebrow piercing but wasn't allowed. I'm over the whole "must put holes in body!" thing now, it just seems kinda odd to have earrings up your whole ear! I wear earrings in my 1st hole almost daily and occasionally my 2nd (studs) but I'm pretty sure my 3rd is basically closed up now.

Yeah, I got mine done at 1 or 2, so it was never a big deal with me. I only have one hole in each ear, no where else, and I wouldn't get any anywhere else eaither, i dont think it would suit me.

After seeing my sister's piercings, I don't want anymore, either!

I guess all parents and people just have different opinions (probably for different reasons) on this. I got mine done at 8 for the first time and they got so infected that I let them grow back together. It took about 2 years for me to get the courage to have them done again ;D I would never have another hole mostly for that reason. I still cringe when I see them being done. ;D

I got my ears pierced for my 12th birthday. My mom took me to have them done. My dad wasn't too keen on the idea at first. ("If God wanted you to have holes in your ears....") He got used to it, though. :-)

I got 1 ear pierced and that was just because I was forced to. They kept saying, it won't hurt, it won't hurt, but just bite on this book. I did and it DID hurt. They just basically stirred a thin needle in rubbing alcohol, held my ear lobe against a square piece of wood and then jammed it through. I was pissed the whole night, squeezing that lobe between tons of tissue.

Ear piercing as a rite of passage always seemed strange to me -- in the BSC and that episode of Full House where Stephanie lets Kimmy pierce hers -- just because even as an eight-year-old, most of the girls I knew had pierced ears. Mine were done when I was a baby, and it's a good thing my mom had them done when I had no say in it, because if it were up to me, I'm not sure I'd ever have gotten my ears pierced. But my mom loves jewelry, so she would not have been pleased to have an unadorned daughter
