^lol! Okay I can't even remember the Claudia subplot anymore. I guess when I read this book in Sept (according to my post), I never picked it up again. Refresh my memory?

Reviving this thread! This is the only portrait I've read and I loved it! I really liked to learn more about Stacey's past, about growing up in New York and I really liked the island plot, too. The Claudia part was just meh and boring to me, and I hate when they put the age wrong on purpose. 13 is 13, man! Don't pretend they were 12 because it is actually 34 years ago! I love Laine too. She may come off as snobby, but it seems that if you are her friend then she can be kind of fun.

I reread this one pretty recently and it is one of my favorite portrait collections. I liked it when they cut their dancing classes, I found it funny. It is sad that Laine and Stacey's friendship ended, but when I thought about it, it always did seem like more of a convenient friendship, just because their parents were best friends.

I always wonder why the obsession with Cinderella? What year was this supposed to be (if any)? Didn't that movie come out in the 50's? I know it was released on video in the late 80's because my Dad bought it for me, but I (or anyone I knew)wasn't so obsessed with it.

I was also one of the ones kinda bored with Claudia's chapter. I did like hearing about the places they went, though. And it showed again how much Stacey's friendship meant to her.
I really like the list Stacey and Laine make of what to get for their studio apartment. And Stacey mentions in one part that her favorite toy is a ten-room Victorian dollhouse a relative gave her. I was so jealous reading that at 8. I loved dollhouses!

^ I love dollhouses and Victorian houses and had forgotten that list. I'll have to reread and refresh my memory. As for the Cinderella thing, I don't remember if all of the kids were obsessed or just Stacey and a few of her friends. If that was the case, it doesn't seem so strange as I know kids get easily obsessed with movies they just watch - no matter if the movie is popular at the time. I was totally obsessed with the Sound of Music when I was three. I still remember telling my grandma and aunt (just to annoy them) that I was going to be a nun like Maria. You have to imagine how this went over as I we are not Catholic ;D As for movie obsessions, though, my little cousins become obsessed with whatever one they have just watched. Right now, it is High School Musical...

Ahh, High School Musical. I until recently taught Ballet to some 6-7 year old girls. All where obsessed with High School Musical. And Hannah Montana. Both of which I had no idea about until recently. My mom (a teacher) said that those two things along with "he Cheetah Girls are massively popular with 7 year old girls.

^ ;D I have to admit that I was embarrassed that I knew all of the words to the High School Musical songs during the show at Disney World. I wanted some upbeat music and had my 10 year old cousin burn that sound track (though I can't stand the movie) and the Cheetah Girls for me and love them both. I guess I want to be 10 again I can't stand the shows, though. Anyway, this makes me think of another on-topic question regarding this book. Isn't this the one where Stacey mentions watching Madonna on MTV or something like that? From what I remember, Madonna and MTV were considered kind of bad where I was from. Maybe my friends and I were just sheltered or maybe Stacey was already becoming a "bad girl" ;D

Maybe my friends and I were just sheltered or maybe Stacey was already becoming a "bad girl" ;D Well I'm from where you're from (lol) and I wasn't allowed to watch MTV until I was around 13. My sister and I would watch it anyway and my Mom would start to come in and watch TRL with us and when she found out what MTV actually was (and not what she'd heard it was, which by her attitude about it I think she thought it was televised orgies or something) she dropped that rule. The way people talked about Madonna when I was growing up was basically that she was a talented performer but had "questionable morals". I first heard "Material Girl" on Alvin and the Chipmunks and my family would always get a kick out of me singing and dancing along to her rendition of "Santa Baby" so I don't think I was ever not allowed to like or Listen to Madonna. If I had started walking around singing "Erotica" that might have been a different story though I do remember my little sister being absolutely obsessed with "Evita" though, which is kind of an odd thing for a 7 year old to be obsessed with. ANYWAY, back to Stacey, I always thought it was pretty "in character" for Stacey to dance around to Madonna on MTV at that age. Don't some of the earlier books even mention her dressing kind of like Madonna? I know they talk about her lace fingerless gloves anyway.

I used to pretend I was Madonna too. My parents remember me "performing"along to my Madonna tapes.

[quote author=dawnomite board=other thread=1141617471 post=1180019814I do remember my little sister being absolutely obsessed with "Evita" though, which is kind of an odd thing for a 7 year old to be obsessed with. This brings back memories - I was also obsessed with Evita (the only thing I like Madonna in) but I was 19. At 7, I was obsessed with the movie Lonesome Dove... ;D Again, back to Stacey and this book with a different point. Is this the one where they glue the blocks together? That was so funny. Also, I felt really sorry for Stacey that she didn't get to be on tv in the parade. Every time I see the people with video cameras filming at Disney World, I try to get their attention because I would love to be seen in a commercial or on the news or something. I was once very briefly in the news at Disney but it was only for about 2 seconds and only one person saw it. So I feel for Stacey. She's the kind who likes to be seen, not like MA who would be moritfied at the thought.

I think the portrait where they glue the blocks together is in Dawn's portrait. That was funny though.

^ Thanks. I haven't read either for a while. Was it Dawn and Sunny? Probably not since Sunny didn't move there until she was older. Who was the friend?

I just checked it was some girl named Ruthie. I don't think we ever heard of her again after that.

^ Thanks. Too bad the books don't feature more recurring characters instead of just putting so many in for one time events. I'll have to reread both of these, though I think they were both two of my least favorite Portraits. I haven't read the portraits enough times to really know, though
