I think the triplets might have been the most likely to demand a "look" at it, too, had they ever found out. the triplets definitely knew about the notebook, because when they were BITs they were expected to write in it. i'm surprised they didn't brag to everyone about getting to write in it, or gossip about things they read:] edited for my spelling

^Oh yeah, I forgot about that! We never saw one of their entries did we? I would have enjoyed that.

So when re-reading this thread, I'm glad that I wasn't the only one who couldn't connect much with this mystery. I guess Dawn in California isn't that exciting to me, which is funny because California is a beautiful setting. I love reading about Fire Island, for example. Maybe I don't feel as connected with the California characters, including the sitting charges.
So Thrash faked his own death and was the surfer ghost? Yawn. And expected. I also thought it was weird how everyone assumed that accidents or "getting stung by a jellyfish" had any connection with the "disappearance". How can someone make a jellyfish sting someone else? And even Sunny's accident... I didn't see how those were related, which made this mystery seem a bit ludicrous.
P.S. - Ellen Miles really liked Dawn. I thought about how this is Dawn's THIRD mystery. And by Book 12, Mary Anne -- for example -- only has one.

Guys named Spanky and Gonzo? Seriously? Just stop at Thrash... I think the fact that Sunny, Maggie, and Jill are not as into detective work as Dawn is what makes this book so...uneventful. But I still like it. It's basically fifteen chapters of Dawn saying "I HEART THE BEACH." Does it look like her sweater on the cover has a snag or loose thread hanging from it? I looked closely and it doesn't seem to be a flaw with my book, it's in the painting! You can count on the BSC to drive home the fact that snakes = WILD. To this day I still want to find a snake ring like Thrash's and a snake bracelet like Claudia's And I don't even know how to surf but I want that neon pink board Thrash points out to Dawn

^It does look like Dawn's sweater has 2 holes in it. The first could either be an awfully thick-ish thread (for her not to have noticed)or a hole in her jeans. If it's a hole, maybe she's wearing red underwear? The small half circle looks more red (color of her socks) than brown. The second hole or black mark is on the sleeve of her arm that's extended a little outward not the one touching Jeff's shoulder. Lol, I just looked at this cover under my desk lamp and now the sweater looks as though it's either very old and fraying or had various gray smudges all over it. Meantime, poor Jeff looks more like a girl than a boy and he needs a haircut and like so many kids on the BSC covers, a neck lift.

Lol at red underwear I think she's pictured with one of the DeWitt boys.

Guys named Spanky and Gonzo? Seriously? Just stop at Thrash... Most of my guy friends have weird nicknames like that. I think it's common in more "alternative" subcultures like punks (my friends) and surfers.

Yeah, I just find it amusing because it makes them sound like Muppets.

^I never thought to think the boy might be someone other than Jeff. Whoever he is, he does not look 10. But then "Jeff" on the cover of Island Adventure looks younger than Jamie so who knows. Lol to the muppet names.

Aww, I'm kinda embarrassed to admit I liked this one. I never read this one as a kid but I kinda wish I had, because I usually got crushes on older guys, and I would have totally eaten up this book about the hot older surfer showing a special attention to Dawn (even though that attention wasn't romantic...for obvious reasons). I'm sure I would have started fantasizing about me being in Dawn's place in this book. They mention Mary Anne going to one of Logan's basketball games in this book, but this came out right after Stacey and the Cheerleaders, and Logan didn't seem to be on the basketball team in that one. Also, in this one they call Aunt Cecelia Jessi's great aunt, instead of just her aunt. I'm happy that Dawn didn't come in first place in the surfing competition, like would happen in most of the books! She was one of five competing and she came in third, which she said was one of the proudest moments of her life. Dawn, placing third out of a group of five isn't exactly anything to be thrilled about...

It just confirms to me why so many older boy plot lines were put in these books for young girls. Maybe because I'm a guy, I don't fully connect with it although when I was younger, I, too, wouldn't have had any problems with older guys )
