I always remember the baked beans smeared all over the Johanssen's front steps and the sitter (Stacey?) hosing them off into the bushes, then silently hoping they wouldn't notice baked beans in the shrubbery and wonder what was going on. I get a laugh out of imagining Mr. and Dr. J peering into the bushes and thinking "how did these beans get here?"
If I recall Stacey somehow cleaned up the beans without Charlotte noticing. Was she in bed? Probably a good thing, I can see Char freaking out about something like that.

I just checked and it's on pages 111-112. Claud is the sitter and Char is awake and does see the mess--she even helps clean it up! Somehow Claud convinced Charlotte that the beans was a prank and that it wasn't necessary to tell her parents. That was it, no discussion, no nothing. Very, very weak and not realistic at all, especially of someone as close to her parents supposedly as Charlotte was.

Don't you wish that all of the mystery titles were as eery as "Beware, Dawn!"
Like...
Be cautious, Claudia! Look out, Mary Anne! Run for your life, Mallory!
Bwahaha. They seem so much more mysterious!

I remember this being about the point in my last reread where I wanted to stop! I feel like this was just a dumb remake of Claudia and the phantom phone calls. I would have liked to read a book about how the kids planned to vote for sitter of the month!

^Me either and really why she wouldn't have said anything about being asked to do so to Claudia! Wiggirl, I've wanted to turn back sometime in the 40's. I've been "speeding" along some of the last ten or so I've read. Reading about the Charges first deciding on the contest and later working it all out would definitely have been a far better tale than this one. They really didn't even play a real part in this story as written, just at the end "It was a 7 way tie. You're all our favorite sitters."

^ When, in reality, some sitters would stick out more than others to the kids. 7 way tie is so PC BSC.

^I remember thinking "Someone fudged the numbers a little to save Mallory's self-esteem."

I would have freaked the eff out if I was Dawn that night she heard noises in the passage. It was disturbing that half the town knew how to get into the house. Did they never secure the thing with more than, what, a hay bale on top of the door? And how did a squirrel get into it? They just had wild animals running around the walls of the house? Imagine the stink if something died in the tunnel.
I remember making cut out artwork in school like Mel's notes, and they were annoying and time consuming. He must have been really pissed to keep up with it for so long.

^I don't think the barn entrance in terms of it not being locked was ever mentioned again outside of Ghost at Dawn's House. I know Trip Man recommended that Sharon find a way of locking the entrance the next day but I don't think they ever did. It's true not many people would go hunting for an entrance or even know to look for one but since they (Dawn and family) knew it was there, I'd think they would have at least tried to rig up something. But then, the passageway in general was not mentioned much. I always loved though how in CA, Jack talked with Dawn about it in Dawn on the Coast and it might have been a sweet scene had Jack been a better person when he came to CT in BSC in the USA and maybe he asked Dawn and Jeff to show him the passage-spend some time with his kids that way. Back to this book, I haven't read it in a very long time but it was creepy and also quite disturbing both from the sitters' stand-point of not telling an adult and also Mel feeling the need to be Mr. X. :/

Even though Stoneybrook is portrayed as a safe and quiet little town, as we know it has more than its first share of crime and mystery.

I'm sure I've talked about this on the boards somewhere, but I guess not in this thread. I just love the cover of this book. I think it's the cover that most successfully creates the creepy feeling that (you would think) the mysteries should have. Too bad none of the mysteries lived up to that scariness.

^ I agree.
And also the covers for DAWN AND THE HALLOWEEN MYSTERY and STACEY AND THE MYSTERY AT THE EMPTY HOUSE. Also the covers for BABY-SITTER'S FRIGHT NIGHT AND BABY-SITTERS BEWARE.
