^Same here, that was so sad and touching. I also felt horrible that Marc went into such major surgery without having more of an idea of what was going on. I don't think we were ever told where the Kubackis lived, were we? I know Timothy (Claud's "luv" interest not the mouse) lived in Darien, CT. I ask because depending on where Marc lived, the ghost-writers easily could have had him visit Stoneybrook. Either that or as Wiggirl posted, he could have been visited during BSC in the USA. Lol a super special of them visiting vacation friends might have been quite interesting! Though, of course, if they had, there would have had (I would think) to be some acknowledgment of time passing which is probably why they never did. A good thought anyway and would make a great fan-fic! Anyone?

^ I always thought it was odd how Claud thought Darien was, like, light-years away, when in reality it was probably only 5 to 10 minutes.

I actually brought this along on my cruise! I sometimes think of this book when I'm at work and it makes me smile. I must say I did sort of spy on the family that sat near us at dinner b/c they made such a scene! There were 6 different families (all cousins and brothers etc) that were from jersey and their poor kids! My favorite quote from their table was one dad who told a kid "I've never met someone with as many problems as you". The kid was 8! I felt sorry for him

Virgo, what's funny is that I thought Darien was maybe not "light-years" away from Stoneybrook but not exactly next door either. Now I am realizing that Tim did tell Claudia their HS football teams would play one another. I know Sam (I think) told us in KGI that there is only one HS in Stoneybrook. Maybe Darien is somewhere on route to Washington Mall? The smallest town I ever lived in had three HS's within 45 minutes of one another, maybe that was similar to Darien and Stoneybrook. Wiggirl, what perfect cruise reading, especially for you! That is awful about the dad no matter why he said it. I was so glad though you had a good trip.

^ I'm just going by the actual map of the southern CT area. Darien is located at least somewhat close to where Stoneybrook would actually be (in theory). So I would agree that it's on the way to Stamford.

Yeah, but to kids that distance can seem enormous! Kids' friendships are often based on bike-traveling proximity. Remember how big a deal it was when Kristy moved out of the neighborhood?

That is cool that Darien is a "real" place. Very good point, Celaeno. Other than a tie perhaps with the Maura, Kyle, and Brenda from "Stacey and the Mystery at the Mall," was Tim the one time character who lived closest to but not in Stoneybrook? I realize we don't also know were Redfield is (Krashers) Game, I just meant as a starting point.

^Sorry for the double post but I thought it more appropriate to add this in here than in "BSC References in Daily Life." Today I was a car with a license plate that said "BMW of Darien, CT." My first thought was this very discussion. Sadly, I did not get a look at the driver!

Most of the CT towns mentioned in the BSC other than Stoneybrook were real, weren't they?

Yeah, Darien, Stamford, Hartford, New Haven..I think maybe Danbury was also mentioned? Lawrenceville is in NJ. I don't think New Hope or Mercer are real.

^IIRC Lila or maybe Greer once told us something about those towns in relation to New Jersey. I completely confess to not remembering what. I just Googled and there is a New Hope, PA. Mercer is apparently an investment firm out here. Mercer Bears are an Atlanta University mascot. Here it is, Mercer is a county in NJ. So they were real but they weren't.

I wonder how Mr. Pike's company felt when he won that contest and they realized that they were going to have to foot the bill for mega family instead of a more average sized one? I also wonder if they had to pay for Stacey and Mary Anne, too. We kind of debated who paid for who earlier in the thread, but I don't think we came to any firm conclusions on that aspect of things. I've also changed my mind about Kristy's friendship with Mr. Staples being creepy. I'm now back to my initial perspective of thinking that it's sweet. I don't like how Kristy INSTANTLY tried to hook him up with Nannie. She barely knows the guy and he's clearly still in pain over his wife's death. Not the best time for matchmaking... This Super Special had an unusual number of standout one time characters: Timothy, Marc, Alex, Mr. Staples. I wouldn't have wanted to see Alex again, and I'm pretty indifferent towards Claud's relationship with Timothy, but I would have liked to hear from the other two again.

Yeah, it had only been a few months for him. Maybe at her young age she didn't really understand the grieving process.

^ I doubt she did. She mentions that both of her grandfathers were dead, but it doesn't seem like she ever knew them or had much attachment to them. Plus, barging ahead with something like that and not really thinking things through is fairly "Kristy" thing to do.

Aw, I loved Mr. Staples! I truly wish he and Kristy had kept in touch. I think Kristy and he had been sharing about his wife and also Nannie, Kristy was bonding with him, and truly only had good intentions when sharing about Nannie. ^ ITA and love how you said that, Starrynight. Timothy did sort of grow on me maybe because I like his name and also the idea of a positive and fun Disney date has always been appealing to me. My future husband will definitely need to be a Disney Land fan or maybe he can become one. Marc, was actually a let down on Ann's part to me that we never heard from him again. I don't remember where the Kubackis' lived but surely they and Stacey and/or Margo and Claire could have corresponded once more. I feel that way also (but not to the same more attached extent) about the Schiavones and Stacey and Maureen. I am reading Karen's Hurricane tonight. I wanted to read about Seth and how awesome and kind he was to honor the oak tree with the bench. I will have to read this, Baby-sitters' on Board, my very favorite Super Special very soon! Thanks for the reminder to do that.
