I haven't read this book, but I know that Karen has to have her spleen removed in it. I know three things about spleen removal: 1)afterwards you have to pee every 20 minutes for the rest of your life. 2) alcohol goes straight into your bloodstream, making it wise to be a teetotaller. 3) if you get pneumonia you die. These fun facts are courtesy of my friend who lost his in a car accident. Were any of these facts mentioned in ls? Like karen saying "omg I have pee remember I have no spleen I am special."

^ Don't remember any of these facts but know that Karen is pretty scared afterwards of getting hurt. Those are interesting facts that don't sound too pleasant. Poor Karen (and your poor friend!) I really like this book and can relate to Karen's fears about getting hurt and being extra cautious. I also love how she and the other little girl organize the toy drive and get the toys for the hospital. Not sure this is one of my favorites but I enjoy reading it when I am down, sick or scared. I love almost all LS books, though ;D

OMG I totally remember this book! I remember after reading it whenever I had a stomachache for awhile I would tell my mom my spleen hurt and she would go "How on earth do you know what a spleen is?" I wish I had this book now. Is this the one where she writes a letter to a famous skater or was that a different one?

I remember this book! I felt so bad for Karen and I cringed when she fell and was describing the pain, it was like I was feeling it too.

I used to do the same thing with my appendix when I was five and read Madeline and then my uncle was hospitalized at about the same time (come to think of it, maybe that's why I read that book - which I still love) for a ruptured appendix. Can your spleen really hurt unless you rupture it with some kind of blunt trauma?

No alcohol?! That's horrible! Especially since I imagine Karen being a total boozer when she grows up.

^ I totally don't see that but then again, I llike Karen And I also don't think no alcohol is a horrible thing so totally different opinions all around ;D As for this book, who was the other little girl in the hospital with Karen? Was she from Mr. Berger's class and is she ever mentioned again? (I can't stand the "once mentioned" characters)

I read in Scholastic's biography of Ann M. Martin that when she was a kid, she fell out of a tree house, landed on a tree stump, and had to have her spleen removed. Write what you know, I guess. The biography is somewhat interesting if you ever get your hands on it. It then adds this: Ann was beginning to have a beautiful, hour-glass figure around that time, but the operation left a big, vertical scar up her stomach. Ann's father said it looked like a night crawler--one of those extra long worms. Everyone was very proud that Ann continued to wear two-piece bathing suits when they went away to the beach that summer. The little girl in the hospital with Karen was named Christina, and I think she was a throwaway character, because I don't remember her ever appearing again.

^ I thought the same thing. ;D Her father didn't say that, did he? If so, that's kind of creepy.... You would think they could reuse the throwaway characters in other books instead of just creating new ones. Annoying sometimes.

Margot Becker R. (yup, an initial at the end instead of the middle) wrote it - she's like a personal friend. She inserts little things like that throughout the book. She even adds a little about herself too. It's weird.

Glad I'm not the only one who found that strange. Is the bio of AMM a whole book or just the thing on the Scholastic website? I might have to check out the site.

I think there's already a thread about this one somewhere...oh well. I remember hearing about this book and wondering who ghostwrote it because I recognized it as being lifted from AMM's life/biography (which I did a book report on in fifth grade.)

I wish I had this book now. Is this the one where she writes a letter to a famous skater or was that a different one? I went through a similar phase after reading Karen's Doll, when Nancy got her appendix out. Every time I got a stomachache I used to tell my mom I think I needed my appendix out and she was like, "How do you even know what that is?" lol. Yes, this is the book where she writes a letter to a famous skater, although I don't remember her name. Karen was watching her on TV and she slipped and fell on the ice. When Karen found out that she needed knee surgery, she wrote to her about her spleen operation and the toy drive they were doing for the hospital. The skater wrote back at the end of the book (a real letter, not a form letter, it can only happen to Karen) saying that she would think of her when she went in for her surgery and sent a toy monkey to be donated to the toy drive.

i thought my appendix needed to be operated on whenever my stomach hurt too but it wasn't this book that did it, as i didn't really read ls as a kid--it was a Girl Talk book where it happened to katie campbell.
