Such a cute story. I read this last night after finishing "Karen's Island Adventure." I wanted to read another more positive Watson LS book. I thought it was awesome that Watson went on the zoo trip especially since that weekend was a little house weekend--he got to spend some extra, unexpected time with Karen. My Grandma chaperoned at least one field trip that I can remember to the park for a picnic. I was in 5th grade at the time and I think that was an end of the year type activity. Since this teacher wasn't the best to me or of people--I have mentioned wishing I had asked to be switched into the other 5th grade class taught by Mr. Behar whose name is somewhat similar to Mr. Berger--a day off was extra welcome. Quick question on the cover is the person next to Karen supposed to be Bobby? If so, then only Natalie is left out (besides Watson) from the illustration of Karen's Zoo group. I will have to now read the BSC version of the Bedford Zoo in MA's Zoo Mystery. I do love the Babar Walk in that one.

It is the actual Bedford Zoo. Unlike "Zoo Mystery," we are not introduced to any Zoo employees. Thinking about that now, it is odd that when Ms. Colman takes the kids to the Zoo's Visitor's Center for their surprise (seeing the display of their sculptures) that there is no one from the Zoo waiting to meet/thank them. It does seem like in the LS, there are extra (non BSC mentioned) places such as the Unicorn Toy Store and Carnegie Park (Karen's Ducklings) so I could totally see if the zoo in this book had had a different name, too. Good question, Greer. Too bad Karen was not mentioned in "Zoo Mystery" or that this book was not somehow parallel to it (though I'm glad it wasn't--I'm not that big a fan overall of the BSC mysteries because I'd rather read about the charges or non criminal life in Stoneybrook)--just that it might have made for an extra dimension to the story had both Karen and Kristy had zoo projects at the same time.

Yeah, I know that the BSC bible was published as the Complete Guide, but it left out Little Sister stuff. So it's nice that they brought back the Bedford Zoo for Mary Anne and the Zoo Mystery, since that was published later. It's just a little extra effort that really rounds out our perception of Stoneybrook

The more Stoneybrook info the better, especially when it is found in both series. That somehow makes it even more real to me--to know both Karen and the BSC girls went to the same place. I just checked and Karen's School Trip was published in January of 1992 and Zoo Mystery in April of 1995. I did have the thought on School Trip that the KIMCC zoo trip maybe did take place in Jan or Feb because Ms. Colman told Karen that if the trip needed to be rescheduled, the class would probably go in the spring. (I'm thinking April or May. To me that makes so much more sense anyway given the probably CT weather. I am glad the trip did work out and hope Jannie got to visit sometime with her family. I always would have liked to have read about Ms. Colman giving her the postcards, which was so nice of her to do.

I thought buying the postcards was a really sweet thing of her as well I always thought having those plasticine animals on display was a really neat idea as well Watson was always good with showing up at Karen's school events. Karen's Twin and all those plays she was in are good examples

This always cracks me up. What Natalie says in Chapter 18. "Go find the lost person. Tell him to wait right where he is. Then say the person's name over the loudspeaker and ask him to meet you in the cafeteria."
I thought, that was Sonny (Hannie's pretend husband.) Who was on the front cover. Doesn't look like Bobby to me. (Unless, Bobby is Asian or Korean.)

^That is funny Buttercup I think Hannie's pretend husband was Scott Hsu. I believe goes to Stoneybrook Day but it would have been very cute had he come along on this trip. Reminds me of wishing David Michael had been able to come on the NY dinosaur museum trip in Karen's Dinosaur. Thinking about this now, it is a little strange that there was never mention of an event at Stoneybrook Day that Karen or her friends ever attended or vice versa at Stoneybrook Academy. Just a new Stoneybrook Saturday thought.

That's right, his name was Scott. I was trying To think Hannie's pretend husband name was. I got the S, right. Just name wrong.

The sea lion on the cover is looking dead into the camera like Jim Halpert while the kids are taunting and pointing behind him. I wonder how this story would go over in a post-Covid universe. Honestly, probably about the same. I’ve still gone to work sick and blowing snot everywhere, so I’m sure that Ms. Colman would keep shoving snotty Kleenex up her sleeve like a deranged magician. I didn’t understand their lack of planning. Like, they were just going to cancel the trip the day of if not enough kids showed up? I would have liked this school project of researching unusual animals. They mentioned capybaras, marmosets, and kinkajous. I’ve been wanting to go to a zoo for a while now, and now I really want to! Karen had some trippy dreams while she was sick, haha. First she was running through the jungle getting her head bit at by giant rainbow tree snakes. Then she and Andrew were shrunk down to a few inches tall and were in the Candy Land board game with real candy. Then she was in the school cafeteria, and Pamela kept stuffing her with more and more chocolate pudding until she woke up and had to throw up in real life. (I love pudding, so that one would have bummed me out.) This had a lot of books mentioned. I have never read Esio Trot and learned that it meant tortoise spelled backwards. I’ve never even heard of Caddie Woodlawn. It’s about a girl in Wisconsin in the 1860s! (I’ll pass.) There was a movie made in the 80s with Harriet from Small Wonder as the main character. Bobby freaked out about holding Ricky’s hand and wouldn’t go farther than holding onto his coat sleeve. A few hours later Nancy was sleeping on top of Karen on the bus ride home. There’s a picture of her nuzzled into the nape of Karen’s neck. I thought the contrast between the two was funny. My brother had one of Karen’s alligator grabbers. I’d say it’s a decent souvenir toy. She could give it to Nannie so she didn't have to bend over to pick things up.
