That really was rotten of Ms. Colman and not very Ms. Colman-like. Karen told us how she made special Valentine's for Nancy, Hannie, Ricky and even Ms. Colman and then the rest of her classmates got more generic ones. It only take a few seconds (especially on one of those pre printed little Valentine's for kids) to just sign your name and maybe also add a sticker or something a little personal. The only slightly positive was at least all the kids were handing out their valentines so it wasn't as though they were seated at their desks either waiting for a delivery or to be called up front by Ms. Colman to get a card. I think I remember both ways as a kid and that sure wasn't too cool or kind of the teachers same with those grams (like Stacey's Valentine ones). Back on a positive note to this book since I really do love it, the KIMCC room parents sure bring awesome treats to parties. Someone had made heart-shaped cookies, another home made cupcakes with Valentine color icing. I thought those both sounded awfully tasty and nice of the parents (and probably their kids who helped ) too.

When I was a kid we also were required to give Valentines to everyone in the class. I remember shopping with my mom for a box of school Valentines one year, and she mentioned when she was a little kid in the 1950s that she and her classmates didn't have to give them to everyone. Perhaps it was the same for AMM as a kid and that's why she had Ms. Colman say that? But it also seems like AMM would know that classroom tradition had changed.

^That is a good point Candykane. I do often feel like some of the BSC and even LS parts are set in the 50's (Ann's sometimes Lucy frame of mind). Maybe in the case of this book it was just to add to Karen's point of how she really doesn't like Pamela, Leslie, or Jannie? Ms. Colman definitely should have thought that out especially since she had many a Valentine's Day with her class.

When we had Valentine's Day parties in elementary school, we always gave a valentine to every kid in the class. Later, when I would read a book or see a TV show where there's some kid who received very few valentines, it seemed really weird to me. At the time it never even crossed my mind to give them only to people I liked!

In elementary school, we were required to give Valentine's day cards to every single person in the classroom so that nobody would feel left out. I remember we were supposed to turn in the Valentine's cards on the day before the class party and the teacher would put all the cards in a box. She would make sure everybody got Valentine's cards. On the day of the class party, the teacher would call each kid upfront to get a Valentine. That was fourth grade, though. Every other grade, we turned the Valentine's cards on the day of the party and we just passed them to everybody. I never had a Valentine's Day "mailbox" except for when I was in kindergarten. The "mailbox" was just a Kleenex box and we decorated it with stickers and felt and everything. I don't remember much about my "mailbox" but I do remember it was super messy. 'Cause, ya know, I was five? I don't own this book but I checked it out of the library recently (I want to read more LS books) and the book is hilarious! I love the playground wedding scene. So very sweet and cute. In second grade, nobody "married" or even hung out together (I remember we used to HATE it when we had to partner up the 'boy-girl' way). Boys were yucky and girls were gross.

I did not like that Ms. Colman did that either. Kids feelings could get hurt easily. However, this is still one of my favorite LS books. I loved Karen planning her wedding.

It's my all time favorite. And likewise, cards were to be given to all classmates when I was a kid. If you wanted to give cards to someone in a different class, that was entirely your own affair outside of class time.

I remember when valentine's day was approaching, we were given a form to take home and it included a list of the entire class so our parents could help us make valentines day, this was probably in kindergarten
I didn't really observe valentine's day, and don't recall being told to give cards to everyone after grade 1 though we all still decorated paper bags, but I would give them to my closest friends, including those in different classrooms. I think a lot of us were doing that, and around christmas and valentine's, we had a school post office where we could write letters or send cards to friends in other classes during class time, address them to the classroom numbers and put them in a mailbox, and student volunteers in the office would sort and deliver them at lunchtime. I'd actually forgotten about that, but thought it was a neat idea.
I loved Karen's pouch design and tried doing it for a school folder in 4th grade, cause we were no longer doing valentine's day exchanges and giving cards was a personal decision.

I just read through most of this thread and it was cool that I read this on February 1st last year. I did reread last night to begin February. I realized this time around we are not told that Pamela will be 8 on her birthday. I don't think any of the KIMCC ever officially did turn 8, did they? I'm glad of that because as all of you know in my heart all the characters will always be how we knew them. It just would have been interesting if even toward the end of the series someone had. I believe in some of the later LS books, a handful of the kids, Ricky included are "almost 8" or even and now I am blanking on the adjective....something meaning closer than almost! We are told in this book that Karen the year before skipped into first grade halfway through K. In some books as we know she skips K altogether. I do need to get back to my LS reread and will be on the lookout for that. I so love the Little and Big House Valentine celebrations, so fun and sweet. I always laugh at how excited Emily is to run over to the Ronald McDonald statue, I wonder if she liked Bob as in Bob's Big Boy, too? I love that the Big House family finally did go to McD's as I go there often. I am thinking, the Big House family other than after Nannie wins the cooking contest and is given a free gift card for their dinner and also on vacation in Karen's Island Adventure and maybe the birthday party for Nannie in Karen's Circus Camp, do the Thomas-Brewers ever eat out? Very cute Ricky and Karen's wedding and how all their friends dressed up and had their own roles. I wonder what Ms. Colman thought of it or if she even knew? I still would have loved had Nancy and Bobby's friendship been developed and we really don't read much about Hannie and Scott either. Sweet start to February Editing for clarity and my apologies for including some incomplete (thinking in my own mind but not really part of what I needed to say here) thoughts.

Zoar, I think that's how Watson stays so rich. I don't recall them ever eating out as a family. Kristy would go out with her friends but never as a family. He's just really cheap -_-
I bet if Ms. Colman knew she would have been part of it. She probably would have gave the bride away or something. The whole wedding was just adorable in the first place. Ricky giving her a kiss on the cheek was really sweet.
I wish Nancy had gotten a wedding too. Bobby does make a good fit with her since she seems to be friends with him while Karen is at the big house.

She had to have known something was going on when everyone came to school unusually dressed up!

Lol, Nostalgiachick. I actually enjoy reading about the Big House family dinners at home because we get to hear about positive family time. I just was realizing that they rarely do eat out. That could have been interesting to read because it'd be a longer family interaction than at home where once dinner is over as Karen often shares everyone goes off on their own. I'm sure when Karen is at the Big House especially for a month, Nancy must play with Bobby and some of the other little house kids we just don't hear about that because no Karen. Maybe if Nancy and Hannie had had a portrait or Bobby even, too. I am a Bobby fan. I think he has a huge heart and just needs reminders and to understand he is okay, he is loved, and let go alittle sometimes of akways wanting to be tougher. I loved him in Science Day with Henrietta the mouse. Wenonah, that is so true! Also she usually is perceptive and wanting to know what excitement is about. I think it was cute the wedding was kids only but maybe Ms. C could have told us somehow that she watched.

^I'd love to read that Nostalgiachick. The KIMCC books are so cool and mean extra to me because I was given them as a special gift. I would have loved had each kid got to narrate. With Bobby and Nancy, and this goes for a lot of the kids, I really would have liked learning more about their families, if the BSC ever baby-sat for them and just their adventures outside of school. If I may help you with your story PM me, just lol know I must get back to writing my own non fiction book and also the LS project/timeline I promised to complete. I'd love to share ideas or help you with getting started, let me know. I know your story will be a lot of fun and great, too.
