^ I, too was skeptical about the whole "Ducky is gay" thing, but book 3 definetley made me a believer. I do not think people here are prejudiced against gay people but in life there are. laylaandmixup, Can you please be more specific with your posts in the future? I am glad you specified here what you meant because in the Summer Vacation thread it sounded like you were accusing me of sounding racist and in this thread it sounded like you were accusing me and others of being homophobic because we think Ducky is gay, which is totally NOT the case. Just don't want any misunderstandings! Let's keep this board friendly!

Trust me, my thinking Ducky is gay isn't homophobic. I think he's an awesome character, and I'm gay myself. I just think the signs are way too obvious to not be true.

When I was 13 and reading the CDs, I thought he was asexual, and had that whole Sunny freak out because she was too much of his friend (makes you wonder if Sunny had some hankering to ask him out?). Now looking back, I do think he was gay.
About the whole junior friends with 8th graders- when my friends and I were freshman, we had senior guy friends. They never tried anything fishy, and we're still friendly with them.

I think that if the series continued, it would've been revealed that Ducky was gay.
Maybe Ann thought that that would be too controversial.

Excuse me for resurrecting this threat here, but I was rereading some of the California Diaries series yesterday, and I noticed that in Sunny, Diary Three, there is an actual reference to homosexuality. I'll write it out here: So, I just wanted to point out that homosexuality was mentioned in the series, even in passing. I also remember that Ducky, Diary Three contained a brief mention of sex, with Ducky saying that he wasn't comfortable discussing the subject. I just found the quote, so here it is: Based on these small passages, I believe that the idea of Ducky being gay wasn't too controversial to the series, and that if the series had continued (and if Ducky actually was gay, and I personally have always believed that he was) it would have been addressed at some point. Anyway, I just wanted to share my little find of the day. Also, hello to everyone. I don't think I've posted on this board in over a year.

i'm glad that the series makes a point to be accepting of people of other races, sexuality, etc(almost to the point where it's annoying), but i agree that it's hypocritical to be disgusted by someone who doesn't agree with you, and i'm glad that the book pointed it out. it's one of the few moments where the series actually lets someone have an opposing opinion. mrs winslow's statement is just as judgemental as being homophobic/racist or anything else. if ann wrote "i can't help but feel disgust for homosexual people, or people of other races" that would have been absolutely wrong. so why is it okay to say the exact same thing but from the other side? let me be perfectly clear, i have nothing against the LGBT community and i am absolutely for gay marriage. i am not saying anything bad about gay people at all. but i also think that people have the right to believe what they want, and the way that this was written, it makes it seem like gay is okay and people who don't agree are automatically disgusting, regardless of their reason why. most people i know who disagree with homosexuality do so because of their religion. if mrs winslow found out that someone was against homosexuality (because of their religion) and she said she felt disgusted by them, is she disgusted by that person or that person's religion? because that's getting into a whole other sticky mess and i know ann wouldn't go there.
i know i'm going off topic and taking this way too seriously, but come on. you can't just say "intolerant people are bad, so let's not like them" in a young adult book.

Eh, I don't feel the need to respect other people's abhorrent opinions just because they are religiously-based. It doesn't lend their ideas/values any more creedence IMO.
