I was convinced, absolutely! Actually, some of her outfits still seem cool to me. The not SO very strange ones.

So if the BSC were living today, where would they shop? I find it hard for Stacey to be trendy and sophisticated at the same time. For some reason I see her as more of a Hollister/Abercrombie girl than wearing a grown up cardigan set from LL Bean. Mary Anne would buy the plainest things possible from the Gap and think she was so hip. Mal and Jessi's parents would take them to JCPenney or Sears cause those seem like oldfashioned, wholesome stores. If they were lucky they'd get ultracool t-shirts with "Arizona Jeans" written on the front just like I did when I was in jr. high. (Lol. Thanks, Mom!)

Actually, I can see Stacey shopping at Bloomingdale's and Claudia buying clothes at thrift stores, just like in the books. I'm totally picturing Stacey as being one of those middle school brats who pays retail price for designer denim, as I stand behind her on the line for the cash register, clutching the "$25 off $100" coupons that dictate when I can shop at Bloomies.
I have trouble imagining where Dawn would shop -- the idea of "California casual" makes me think PacSun, but no self-respecting individual would want to buy clothes there!

I've been to Bloomingdale's in the city and seen the section where Stacey would have shopped and it was really expensive: marc by marc jacobs, diane von furstenberg, etc.

^I assumed Stacey would be shopping in the YES/juniors area, with, like, Juicy Couture- and True Religion-type brands. So still expensive, but in the $120 range for a dress, rather than the $350+ a DvF would cost. Basically, I'm thinking Stacey would be a combination spoiled brat/slave to fashion.

^ I think Stacey's outfits were described once as being very Banana Republic.

I think Mary Anne would definitely be a gap girl, but I don't think she'd think it was cool. Mary Anne's never claimed to be a fashion queen and the Gap isn't bad. It's mostly just basics that I think would suit her perfectly.
I agree on Stacey, she'd be wearing the Juicy, Sevens, etc... whatever higher end brand was trendy at the time. Claudia would probably hit up thrift shops. Dawn.. hmm.. I don't know. Kristy, Mal, and Jessi would probably all shop at the same stores, Kristy because she doesn't care about clothes and Mal and Jessi cause they aren't allowed at other stores.

They mention Stacey wearing black so often, I tend to think of her with that cliche poet look. You know, with the black clothes and the beret, which I think she does wear sometimes.
Kristy's going to be buried in her Collie cap. Stacey would be horrified at the fashion faux pas, while Claudia decides to decorate the coffin so they'll at least match.

^Oh, wow, I totally got my parents to get me a beret because both Stacey and Molly from the American Girls books wore them. Looking back on it, basing my fashion choices on a character who lived fifty years before probably wasn't the wisest idea.

All I can think of when people say Dawn wears casual baggy clothes is she must look like a hobo like Mary-Kate Olsen/Nicole Richie.
Claudia would probably be into the 80s fashions that are making a comeback. Those weird tight leggings are very popular right now. I think she'd have to stick to vintage/thrift stores because they just don't sell the nuts she wears in real stores.

I'm guessing you didn't mean to say nuts, but it's funny...Claudia probably WOULD wear nuts if there was a way to do it. Hey, it's no weirder than her vegetable shirt.

Hee! Ok, I didn't notice the change at all when I posted. But, no, I didn't say nuts. I swore, which is apparently not allowed on this board.

She would be one of those girls walking around with leggings underneath her jean skirt. Ew. I have absolutely no idea where Dawn would buy her "California casual" clothes. Jessi, Mal, and Kristy would be shopping at low-end department stores like Penney's and Mervyn's.
