^ Like, for instance, babysitting? :-p
edit: V Oh, it's been discussed at length. I just thought it was a funny accusation on the new friend since the old friends are the same way.

^ Yeah, but I think I addressed that in another thread.

Ashley did seem to have a life outside of art in Claudia, Live From WSTO. I dunno.

Great wit from Stacey - "In my breadbox of friends, you are a CRUMB." ;D
Yeah, like she had enough to fill a breadbox.

Just reread and had a more negative impression of Claudia this time and a more positive impression of the BSC. I can kind of see how they felt about her missing the meetings. True, they were jealous but I think it was more than that. Even though Kristy especially is a little too dedicated to the club sometimes, it is a commitment. Claudia just seemed to shrug off her responsibilities and almost acted like "I'd rather hang out with Ashley because my art is more important than you. " I don't know, that was just my perception this time.

I think the BSC reacted pretty normally of middle school girls in this book. When I was in middle school girls would try to solve problems like that. I do see why they were mad at Claudia though, I understand that Claudia's art is important to her, but she shouldn't just drop her club responsibilities. I will have to re read it again soon to see if I still feel the same.

Yeah claud shouldn't have bailed on the meetings, but wasn't she trying to rush back for them and then rather than fight with ashley she'd just give in and stay with her? seems pretty par for the course when it comes to claud. she doesn't exactly have much of a backbone.

Yeah, I think she wanted to get back but Ashley kept distracting her and she finally thought they would get along without her and it'd be no big deal.
I don't think positively of the BSC in this at all really because they just seemed to have such a negative view of Claudia's friendship with Ashley from the get-go. So Ashley turned out to be "bad" for Claudia in the end (taking time away from other stuff that mattered to her), but they weren't even supportive from day one when they acted cold towards her for wanting to sit with Ashley at lunch. It didn't help that Ashley "linked arms protectively" with Claudia, called herself Claudia's mentor, etc. Ashley was possessive, and generally, so is the BSC! But I just always disliked how they showed so little understanding for Claudia's excitement at finding someone with a similarly intense passion for art, even if she happened to have some trouble balancing their outings with the meetings.

Agree about Claud not having a backbone ;D As for the BSC being possessive, also agree on this but I think their reaction wasn't necessarily towards Ashley but towards Claud's attitude like "art is more important than you." True, they should have been more supportive but I can see how they felt abandoned - almost like second best. I think they usually are pretty supportive of Claudia's artwork. Also, maybe they picked up right away on how stuck up and narrow-focused Ashley was. Maybe it was stereotyping or jumping to conclusions but sometimes you can just "sense" something with someone.

Judging by the BSCs general reaction to ANY outside friends, I hardly think they paid enough attention to Ashley to get any sort of vibe about her. Seems more typical for them to just see someone new and despise them.
I do agree with you that they are supportive of Claudia's "art" in general. Too supportive if you ask me. I don't think her "art" should really be encouraged. I mean, clay earrings and junk? Her "art" makes me shudder.

This is one of my least favourite books... I always found it quite boring, though the meaness was funny. Dawn's rhyme, haha.

^ I'm pretty sure that Dawn wrote the poem...I think I remember her making it up as she rode her bike over for the meeting or something.

Yeah, I just said this in the Ashley thread, but I think this book comes at the time the BSC is at their most clique-ish and standoffish--and I think they tend to be pretty superior themselves! (They certainly make a lot of nasty comments about Ashley's clothes, which have nothing to do with how she acts, and IIRC, precede Claudia missing meetings). I've always thought the way they treated Mallory in #14 was much more about being a clique than actually testing her sitting skills, and it's pretty cold how they practically never mention the Shillaber twins once they start eighth grade.
Yeah, me too. I remember being reminded of it in Mary Anne's Makeover, too--there's something sad about how nasty they can be about what should be a positive thing, for these really silly reasons. They don't understand Claudia's passion for art; she should find people to share that part of her life with. They spent ages punishing Mary Anne because they weren't sufficiently part of her hair-cutting decision? Sigh.
