Liverwurst is what we used to hide our dog's heartworm pill in so that he'd eat it. I never once wanted to try it, but he thought it was awesome.

I thought that this book was okay. I did like reading about the various signs there are in American Sign Language. And while I did like reading about Jessi's ballet practice, I prefer her other ballet books. I didn't like how Jessi received the role of Swanilda. It seems like it was too much too soon for Jessi to be getting such a large role.

I like this book a lot, though not one of my faves. I am over half deaf, so very relatable. It's odd how quickly Jessi learned sign language. I'm learning right now, and it took me a year to learn just 400 signs. As for the ballet subplot, I don't care about it except for the part when Jessi invites the deaf kids to see the ballet, that was so sweet

Reread this one and, yes, it seemed farfetched even for a BSC book that Jessi was having full in-depth conversations (including abstract concepts) in ASL without much struggle after studying for what....only a month or so? Is there anything that Jessi's not perfect at?

Yeah, jessi is perfect at everything. Learning ASL is hard and takes a lot of time. I've been learning it for a year and a half, and I'm maybe halfway fluent.

Overall, I liked this book. The story was pretty sappy but I like that sort of thing, lol. Even though there were things that happened that were far fetched, I still liked the message it sent.
Some of my favorite parts were: the Pike kids learning signs, Jessi's budding friendship with Mallory (they seem more bff than the older girls already), Jessi inviting Matt's class to the ballet, Matt signing that he was very happy at the end. This was definitely a feel good type of BSC book which was a nice change of pace from some of the others.

I kind of loved this book, even though Jessi managed to become insufferable within the opening paragraph. She is great with languages, great with kids, great at waking up early, great at ballet.... good grief, child - are you great with humility too?!
I loved reading about ASL, though snorted several times at the idea that Jessi turned into an ASL expert overnight - some of the sentences she was signing were in no way basic/for beginners at all.
I thought the scenes with Hayley and Jessi were wonderfully written and gave Hayley a proper multi-layered personality. I also loved the scene with Karen. The girl can do no wrong in my eyes. Obviously she was serving refreshments at a ghost party. Where did she even come up with ghost pate? I love it. Poor sweet terrified long-suffering Andrew.
One thing I didn’t like was how the other sitters sort of fell to the side in this one. I know it’s Jessi’s POV, but aside from Kristy, we hardly heard about the others at all.
A lot of people have commented on how great the Ramseys are. Yes ok, but what about the time they went away for the weekend and left an 11 year old in charge?! And yet maintain a rule that she can’t sit for other kids during the night? What?

I've been listening to this one on Audible and I also loved the Karen scene. The way she scares people in the early books is awful sometimes, but her ghost party with the ghost pâté sounds exactly like something I would have done as a kid. I also loved that when Claudia gave her crackers with liverwurst for her "ghost pâté" snack, she actually ate it and enjoyed it. I don't think I would've eaten it and enjoyed it, but it's nice to see her eating it instead of being spoiled and throwing it out!

Even her knees are flexible. I'm curious about her t-shirt. That's a lovely dress. That creepy house makes an appearance in the background of a few of these covers.

I like the little squirrel watching them. This is nice. They look like they're somewhere tropical. The title translations were all pretty true to the original.

Lovely! Jessi looks so caring in both of those. So does the squirrel

The squirrel is adorable and a good addition. It's cool to see some continuity with the signs being shown.

This one is all right. I like Jessi, but sometimes she's TOO good, you know what I mean? I wish she hadn't gotten the main role, but still an important one. That would be more believable and realistic. I don't remember the rest of her roles, but iirc, she got the lead a lot.
And of course she was the "perfect" Swanilda. I did feel bad, though, when she thought she couldn't be the perfect Swanilda because she's black. She shouldn't have to feel like that.
I did get a little bored with this one because it's so... goody-goody? I'm okay with the sappy ending, but it felt like everything just got better and better as the story progressed. Obviously that's great for the characters, but it just doesn't make a very interesting story. And I know Jessi is a fictional character, but I worry about her taking on so much as an 11-year-old. Although, is it realistic for a ballet class to meet only twice a week (outside of rehearsals)?
It annoys me that Kristy starts getting pissy about Jessi being late on Fridays. She has zero control over that. Plus, in Claudia and the New Girl, Claudia states that Kristy is often late or early because she's at the mercy of Charlie's schedule. This might just be early installment weirdness (I don't think that's ever mentioned again), but nevertheless, it comes across as very hypocritical. I like Kristy less as an adult tbh.

What really annoyed me is that we are told Jessi's back on nearly every single page. We already know she's black because she's on the cover! Did we need to be reminded so often?! At least it's not mentioned so much in the later books and she's referred to as "African American." Which doesn't make sense. She wasn't born in Africa.
